How to make the volleyball team?
-
i know its been asked so many times, but: I have been playing volleyball for about 2 years now, and i'm finally going into 7th grade, and I can join athletics. I practice a lot, and my grades are high, but I still have a problem in my way. There is about 100 girls trying out. I know A LOT of them haven't ever gone near a volleyball, but a bunch of them went to camps. I played on a league (no, not club, just small league) team during the spring of 2010 (my first team) and we were first place out of 10 teams. I have all the skills I need, but my serving scares me. I can perfectly fine do an underhand, but that means I would either make C team (aka LOSER TEAM.) Or make off- season where I don't play at all. I really need to make A or B team. I am going to one camp this summer and have a friend who can help me, but I need some advice on serving, how to make my basics better (setting, bumping, spiking), and how to impress the coaches

i answered a similar question to this if you want to take a look: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Alw7GzPVaA3knYGw7Z_mkj4nDX1G;_ylv=3?qid=20100625150353AAsJW0E as for skill development, you need hands-on help with a coach so i can't help you much there. you can try googling for videos and tips on each area for extra details that are probably better than i can explain here. you can find a lot of helpful stuff on youtube and on websites by coaches/players who make webpages all about skills just for you instead of having lives :D as for the tryout itself, it is EXTREMELY important to: a) hustle EVERYWHERE, commit to the balls, b) be the loudest, most talkative one on the court no matter what position you play, and c) be extremely supportive of your teamates. coaches love people who run back in line in drills (you don't have to sprint, but at least jog), hustle on the court, and commit to the ball--don't let ANYTHING drop and sprint to tough balls and dive on the ground if you need too. you have to make sure to be loud and talk it up on the court (coaches love this, and they look for people like these because they stand out as dominant players as well as leaders. plus, it gets your mind into the game really well :) ). call all your balls LOUDLY, open up to the passers (coaches always look for this), be aggressive and take action if there is a ball between you and another player and you're not sure who's supposed to get it, and make sure to call balls in or out to help out your teammates. it also is extremelyyyyy important to support your teammates. even if you hate the person outside of volleyball, you have to leave your feelings off the court. if one of the girls makes a nice pass, make sure to let her know. if they screw up, go over and hi-five them and say "shake it off" or "its okay youve got the next one", or if they mess up on a serve tell them to make it up with a nice pass. again, i assure you that coaches watch for this. again, it also helps get your head in the game. i cannot emphasize enough the importance of these three things. over the years, my coaches have told me (there's been about 12 of them) the extreme value of these behaviors when looking for the deciding factor in choosing between players. its sooooo important. it's a foolproof way in impressing coaches. if at your tryout, a coach pulls you aside for individual help, take advantage of this time to be very polite, ask questions, and apply their advice to your skills on the court. this demonstrates your coachability. you don't have to be a club player, or even on a team of any sort, to make a good team if you do these things and try your hardest :) good luck

Im going into 7th grade and i love vball too. All i can say is practice, practice, practice. Oh so what if you dont make the A team and you make the "loser team" :) Just as long as your confident. If you dont make the A, or B team you can still practice and work your way up to those teams. You can also practice in the off season to get better, and better. Just be confident and i wish you the best of luck! :)

I made varsity for my first time trying out (last year, i was in 8th) and I was the setter. This year, the places are C-team, varsity, and JV. you should try using alot of man power on your serves. and if u were first in the leagues i dont need to help you with any other skills. and t impress to the coachs you need :attitude and respect.
Hey, i have also tried out for volleyball but have failed :(. We started off by doing stadiums, its going up and down the stairs if you catch my drift. Than we did little bumps back and forth with partners. Then we did little games. I would suggest that you toughen your legs first.

This is a simple question and you are worrying way too much about this. You should be having fun, it's a sport. Keep your goals realistic, of course you want to excel but you should be honest with yourself in case you don't perform on the level with the other girls. With that said, practice and play as much as you can, go to camps or talk to coaches, but don't WORRY so much. And if you don't make the A or B team, then maybe you shouldn't be on the C team since you call it a loser team anyways (That's kind of rude by the way). And if you fail, talk to the coach of the A and B team and tell them you really think you can play at that level and want to know if you can maybe attend the practices or if they know of other ways you can improve your skill. Thaaanks.
