Playing Varsity Right-side vs. Outside?
-
I used to play middle, but this past club season I was changed to outside. & I looovee it!! I think it is a much better fit for me overall. My club coach has told me that I have improved so much and she can see my comfort in that postion whereas I was not at all in middle! Plus, my hits got way better than they had ever been at any other position that I've played. I played middle for 3 seasons and I still wasn't even good. But from just one season with outside I was hitting right up with the girls that had been playing it for longer. So much to my dismay, when I came back to school vb after my club season was over the school's varsity coach had me play right side... I don't know what it was but when I came back to school vb, my outside hits were waaaayy off! I guess it was just being in a new environment and I was uncomfortable/nervous. So I'm not surprised that she moved me to right side. But the problem is that I SUCK at right side. I am like the worst ever!! haha. I'm right handed, which isn't a deal breaker.. but it certainly doesn't help. And although I do think that I am better at blocking than passing which is more characteristic of a right side, I still think I should play outside! ;) The girl who my coach put as outside was on my club team and I played more than her, so I just don't understand why she has my spot.. haha. Teammates tell me I should be outside and not her but I just can't seem to get it together and hit like I know I can... :/ So after all that... my main questions are: -Should I stick with rightside and just do my best to get good at it? -Should I attempt to play outside instead? -How do I make the switch back to outside? (talk to my coach, or just hit outside when I can and prove it to her! lol) SORRY that was so long!!! I had a lot to get out of my system, lol. Thanks soo much if you actually read all of that! :)

Answer:
I encourage you to talk to your coach about your chances of playing left-side rather than right-side. Find out what she's thinking, why she put you there, etc. Ask her for an opportunity to play outside again, and pledge to do your best. DO NOT badmouth your teammate during this conversation. Talk about your own personal goals and expectations, and what you can do to make the team better. As a coach, I do not react well when one player comes to me trashing another. As for your hitting quality dropping, that's something that you can control. And my bet is that you've got a mental block for some reason. Figure out why you're sabotaging yourself, and let it go. It would help a lot if you went into a hitting drill with positive thoughts -- "I'm a hitter. I crush the ball." etc. rather than the negative stuff swirling around in your head now -- "OMG, I suck. I'm so awful." Your body will do what your brain is telling it to do, and right now your brain is telling your body to make mistakes.

Haha its okay.. I am in the same position you are except switched around.. haha.. I think you should try to improve at right side.. Its always awesome to be really good at 2 positions rather than just 1. Thats a quality that college scouters look for. But really try to hit ur best at outside. Get used to your setter and try to see what type of sets you are most comfortable with. This will help you hit the ball harder and will ensure that you get switched from club to school volleyball. Also getting comfortable with ur perfect set will help you direct your hits if you want to. i hope i helped :)

if u like outside better then u should go for it! so what that u had a few off hits. have confidence in yourself and show ur coach u should have that position. but its also good to try ur best at right-side. playing multiple positions is always a plus when it comes to scouts. if u still have a hard time with outside tell ur coach about ur awesome club season and ask for advice on how to get ur hit back. ur coach will be happy u want advice and will love that u spoke up. show them what u got (;
