How to set volleyball farther?

  • Hi, school's about to start and so volleyball tryouts are around the corner. I got the bump down but it's the set I have trouble with. I can set it pretty high but it only goes like 6 feet in the direction I want it to go. How do I set it farther? Do I even need to set it that far in a game? Plus in a game, can I just simply hit the ball over the net? Kinda like spiking but without leaping in the air to hit it. Need help. Thanks so much! :]

    I read something about flicking your wrists on one of these answers.. do NOT do that. That is bad form and your not supposed to set like that. Use your legs to get more power. Yes you can do this to hit the ball, it's called a roll shot.

just change the angle of your arms/hands a little lower and the ball will go out farther. So instead of setting straight up, you are setting at a 45* angle. If you are right at the net and receive a good pass 6ft will probably be enough, but much of the time a setter will have to move out of their ideal spot on the floor and have to set to many different distances. As for hitting the ball you can hit it pretty much however you want. As long as it is not a carry or double touch. But a jumping attack is the best bet for a point.

Setting is about technique, and your fingers will eventually get stronger after practice. But the basics, have your hands like a triangle above your forehead, when the ball comes kind of absorb the ball a little, not so long that it's a carry. But think of it as a hot potato or an egg, you absorb it and push out. Push your hands entirely out so your arms are straight. A lot of people just use their fingers and kind of tap it really fast. You wanna have your hands really soft and just push out. It works like a charm : ) And with the standing spike without hitting? Like a roll shot you mean? Yeah you can do that.

Jump setting allows you to set the ball farther. It applies more force to the ball which allows it to travel a greater distance. You might need to set the ball that far in to game if it's not a perfect pass. So it's good to know how to set far. Also, if you want to set back row or outside, it could be more than 6 feet. Yeah, you can hit the ball over the net without jumping, that's called a down ball. But that's mainly used to hit from back row, or if the set is behind you or too far off the net.

Use your legs when you set. As you impact with the ball, bend your knees, and push out with your knees. DO NOT use your arms to push out, you can hurt your wrists like that. Obvserve proffesional players to get some tips. Sure you can hit a ball over the net without jumping, but coaches are looking to see if you can actually SPIKE. Without jumping, its called a down ball, you can't possibly put alot of force into it, then it'll just go way far out or into the net. Start practicing jumping and hitting.

to set farther you have to use your legs. bend your legs as you make contact with the ball and extend them as you extend your arms. as for the hitting, that would be called a down ball. it's allowed in a game but it's less powerful than an actual spike because you don't get on top of the ball in order to hit to the ground faster. if you're trying out for a team it would be a good thing to know how to both spike and down ball.
