How do you improve your vertical jump?

How do you improve your vertical jump?

  • I'm applying for a volleyball scholarship from a college that's looking for a 5'11 outside hitter who can reach 9'9. I'm only 5'9 and I can't really control how tall I am but I CAN control (or work on) how high I can jump. Anyone know any exercises I can do that would help me improve my vertical jump? Would jumping up stairs every day or wearing ankle weights help strengthen?? Anyone know any ways I can jump higher??

  • Answer:

The best way is to work your leg muscles, specifically your calves. You can build up your calves several ways. Running stairs is one, just find a set of stairs, the best are things like bleachers, and run up and down them. If you don't have easy access to something like that my favorite exercise is just standing with the front of your feet on a raised surface, like a step-stool or just a curb. Hold something heavy, it can be weights or just milk jugs filled with water, anything to increase resistance. Then just start lifting yourself up on the fronts of your feet. This is all work on your calves, do this for several sets, every day.

I played volleyball in high school and I was a middle. I joined the track team and did all the jumping events (high, long, and triple) and I jumped a lot higher each year. I don't know if that helps but the running workouts and weight lifting really got me stronger.

how can you apply for a sports scholarship? generally they give them to you and you can't just "apply" or whatever.. anyways, do lots of weight training, and do box jumps, preferably with weights in your hand or ankle weights. i would also use a vertimax if you have access to one..they are ridiculously awesome!

Run stairs...my team just started doing this every practice and our verticals have improved tremendously. Try doing different things every time you go up, like normal, skipping a stair, bunny hopping, hopping on one foot then the other, etc. You have to work at it. There is no easy way to just jump loads higher. But you should make sure that you are truly using your arms to explode off the ground after your approach. Good luck!

jumping up stairs is alright. ankle weights not so much. You should probably do squats. The best training will depend on what kind of ability you have. Read the Basic Jump Science page on this blog http://verticalleaptraining.blogspot.com
