Can I start a club like Bunco?

How to start a club volleyball team...?!?!?

  • okay, so me and my friends are going to start a new club volleyball team, and we are going to join a club that already exists. my old club coach is the head of the club, and she is going to help us start a new team. but we were just wondering, what all would we have to do to prepare for the club season? and we were going to do a fundraiser to raise money for the team. but we were wondering, about how much money would we need to raise to cover the basic things to start a new team. and what all would we need to get for the team (like balls, ect.) and also, we have been thinking of colors and names. for the colors, we thought dark green and black would be cool. our second choice is purple and black. what do you think? any other ideas? and if you have any name ideas we would love to hear them! (: thankyou (:

VB Coach gave good ideas. However, the one point they seem to have missed was the expense to play in tournaments, and if your team qualifies, Junior Olympics. Even without JOs, regular tournaments will cost plenty of money. You'll all need to pitch in some money, or get a parent to pay (preferable because they can pitch in more). Typically, $1,500 is just enough to pay your way. If you can get a company to sponsor you, like most clubs (my club is sponsored by Quiksilver), you'll receive jerseys, shirts, warm ups, backpacks, etc. for free.

It saves you a lot of work to establish a new team within an already set-up club. The club director has to file a lot of paperwork with your regional volleyball association, so find out from her what forms you'll need to fill out. Things you need: A coach (or two). A practice court and a couple of 2-hour blocks (or more) for practices. At least one ball per player for practices. A ball cart, preferably a portable one that you can take to tournaments. (These suckers can be expensive, but sometimes you can get a break if you buy enough balls at once.) You'll need at least 2 sets of uniforms per player. When I got uniforms for a brand new club I helped start a few years back, I ordered 2 jerseys, 2 shorts, 2 pairs of socks, a warm-up t-shirt and a set of warm-ups per player. I was able to get a good price on all that and it cost about $110/player, but prices have only gone up since then. (Typically uniforms are paid for out of club dues though; check with the club director about uniform issues.) I also got a whistle for each player for our reffing assignments. And a binder with the club logo on the front for storing handouts, practice notes, season journal, roster, etc. The club might already have a color scheme designated; find out if you have any leeway on that. Dark green and black sound cool but you need a color that is a serious contrast for your libero. If one of your jerseys is dark green and the other one is black, that's not enough contrast to make refs happy, so one of your jerseys will probably have to be white with green/black trim. You'll have the same problem with purple and black, depending on the shade you choose. Good luck! I hope this works out for you and that you have a successful season.

The costs will really depend on what you want to do tournaments wise. Are you going to play in every qualifier that you can? You will have airfare and hotel and food costs on top of the nearly $1000 entry fee for each tournament. If you play local tournaments, it will only cost you around $100 to $150 per weekend and no travel or hotels. Are you going to play every weekend? Or just once a month? Are you going to keep just 6 players? Or up to 12? Are you going to get minimal uniforms? Or top of the line with 2 of everything? The first club I helped start was a budget club. The reason they started was that they could not afford the other clubs. We gave them one pair of shorts and one numbered T-shirt. We played one tournament a month and they were in town. We practiced only one day a week. We were more than $1000 per season cheaper than the rest of the clubs. If you want more direct help from me, please contact me.
