How do I set in volleyball?

I need help with Volleyball, how do you set the ball?

  • Okay, I want to start another sport, I play basketball, and I want to tryout for the volleyball team, I can't set the ball...I always mess up and the ball hits the net, it's frustrated when I can't do it. Luckily I still have like 2 and a half more months until volleyball tryouts, I can practice in the meantime. Well I know that I'm suppose to use my finger tips, but I keep messing up...like when the ball comes toward me, I'm ready to set it because it's high in the air, I'm in the ready position, then the ball comes, I hit it with my finger tips, but then I HAVE to slap it with my palm, I don't know, it happens fast so I can't really remember how it feels, but i think my finger tips aren't strong enough, how to I get them strong enough to set a volleyball? any finger exercises that actually work? Thanks! :)

The only thing i cannot do well in volleyball is set. but i know the theory behind it. Generally, you want to shape your hands like a diamond and use only your thumbs, pointer fingers, and middle fingers to recieve the ball after its bumped. Think of it like an egg, if it hits your hands solidly, itll break. You have to recieve it, almost cradle it, and then set it to where you want it to go. But its a hard balance, because you cant catch it, or hit it cause then youll get called a double. It helps to be almost directly underneath the ball, so it takes a lot of agility and athleticism, its the most important position in the game. But dont worry if you cant get the hang of it. You can always play back row or hitter. Good luck, i hope this helps. :D

The trick to properly setting the ball is to spread your hands apart so your fingers on your hand are not touching each other. Now raise your hands to just above your head and about 8 inches in front of you and touch the index fingers and thumbs of each hand to the other thumb and index finger of the other hand. Look up through the hole they create, that is where you want the ball. Now when the ball comes to you, you want to flex the fingers a little and keep your eyes on the ball. Use your fingers to push the ball up and in the direction you want it to go.

You seem to know how to set the ball, the issue is accuracy. When you set always try to have your body square to where you are setting it. It seems like nothing, but it helps dramatically. Also get the power of your sets from your legs. Just like in basketball, you use your legs just as much as your arms to power the ball to where you want it to go. Some people, including myself, find it easier to accurately set using only 3 fingers from each hand (thumb, pointer, middle), rolling the last two down and away. It feels awkward at first and most people don't use it, but no harm in trying it out. Finger Exercises: 1. Finger Push-ups (regular pushups, but on your fingers instead of palms) 2. Stress ball with fingers
