I have a few questions about volleyball :)?
-
ok well i want to try out for my high school volleyball team and i know nothing about the sport. (i have time to learn though our coach requires us to join a rec league when its our off season which starts next month) anyways in high school leagues do all players play all positions? if not whats the best place for 5'2 girl? (i was diving caption for our 8th/9th grade team so i can jump and have very strong legs) also i know that you can only have three touches per side. so if i touch the ball once then some else touches it can i touch it again or does another person have to touch it? sorry about all the confusing questions :) thanks

Answer:
what the coaches are looking for are the girls with the right mix of skill, athleticism and attitude/team work. Skill wise your goal should be to be able to pass the volleyball well, serve overhand and be able to spike. Given your height the best position for you would be back row defensive player (Libero) or Setter. Work on the following things to be ready for tryouts: 1. Do gym like workouts 2 - 3 times per week during the summer. Lift weights (legs and arms) do push ups and sit ups. Every day do some running especially sprints and jump rope 2. Work on volleyball skills. Have fun and learn in the Rec League. Go to a camp during the summer to develop your skills. If you get the chance play in an organized 2 v 2 (called doubles - like you see at the olympics) sand or outdoor league/club this is great for getting skills and in shape. 3. At tryouts make sure that you present your self as coach-able, a good team mate and as a winner. Talk loud, call for balls, hustle after every thing.

well in volleyball there are six players on a court... there can be other people to switch in on the team.... so its 3 in the front and 3 in the back and there is libero ( also defensive specailist) blocker( if yo are right handed it is called outside hitter, and if you are left handed it is called right side) middle ( tallest girl on the team, and blocks with the outside hitter and right side) and setter......... scince your only 5'2 ( thank you for stating how tall you are) you will probably be a libero, but you have to practic at passing ( aka bumping) because thats all liberos are used for.now for the 3 hit if you touch it then someone else touches it, you CAN touch it agin, and about the positions, once you have a stated position you arent anything else, so if the coach asks say, i think im gonna be a libero, well scince your 5'2 it migh be a little obvious, no offence :) and if you have any more ?'s contact me and ill help you out!! i personally have been playing volleyball for 5 yas so i bet i can help!! good luck! :)
If yuu can jump then yuu might be able to play on the net . But i would say middle back would be the best postition . && if yuu touch it and then someone else touches it yuu can touch it again yuu just cant touch it two times in a row . (:
for your first question, no, even on junior varsity teams, high schools generally have set positions for all players, and with your height i would suggest libero, if you enjoy passing, or setter, if you enjoy setting. you can touch the ball twice in one play, but never twice in a row.
Yes, there are 3 touches per side, if you touch the ball, someone else has to touch it after you, but when someone else touches it, you can touch it after them. You cannot touch it 2 times in a row though. :) You would be good in the front row I think... Hitter/blocker. ;)

The best position for a girl of your height would probably DS or Libero, which are players that only play in the back row. You'll learn more about that in the rec league probably. For your other question, if you pass up the first ball, you can't touch it again right after you touch it the first time. Someone else, like the setter, will almost always get the second hit, and she will get it up for anyone to hit it over (except herself). You can hit the ball twice if, say, you got the first pass, someone else got the second one, then you can get the third. You just can't touch it two times in a row. Another thing that you'd ought to know, especially because you are beginner, is that volleyball can get very frustrating and it makes you mad, but trust me, it's so worth it :) Just remember when your passing, get your feet to where the ball is going to land first, and then pass it. Don't swing your arms and keep your shoulders forward. You want to use your legs to push the ball up. Make sure your knees are bent and that your butt isn't sticking out. You know you are low enough that when you reach down with your arm you can touch the ground. I hope I helped, and good luck!!!! (:
