Playing right?

  • Last year i played volleyball for my high school team and played middle, i was fairly good but after talking to my coach, we both agreed I should play a different position. He suggested playing left but I argued playing right. I feel like there are many lefts on so if i got good at right i'd have a better chance of playing. My only problem is that our 2 current rights are left handed and my coach said that that will most likely give them an advantage. To any rights and lefts out there... any advice? Is playing right really a lot easier if you're left-handed?

    The lefties do have an advantage since the ball is in their "power" position. The ball does not cross their body when it is set and it is easier to hit. However, that does not mean you can not be a good right handed right side. As stated above, you really need to learn to hit the line. You will be a starter if you get a good line shot. Most right sides hit cross court and further cross court. Even the lefties. To help you hit the line, you will need to start your approach on the sideline or just inside. You need to approach the net straight. If you approach straight down the sideline and you want to change your line shot, you can move your body around and hit the cross court shot. If you approach at the sharp angle like most other right handed right sides, you can change your cross court shot to further cross court. You could easily be a starter if you develop your line shot. Work at it. Please do not give up on it. It will be hard to hit the line. You will be tempted to hit the cross court since you can hit it harder. Since most hitters hit the cross court, most blockers block the cross court. Even a weak line hit can be a winner since no one uses it. Good luck

You just need to play wherever you feel comfortable playing....if you want to practice to get better at right side then go for it and really work hard. Advice for a right handed, right side hitter: 1) Use your right hand advantage to hit down the line(this could get you favored over others) 2) If you can't or don't like hitting it down the line then swing your arm all the way facing the opposite corner of the court and aim there. 3) Don't give up and keep trying. 4) If right side doesn't work out and you really don't like playing left maybe you could play middle (usually you need to be sort of tall or able to jump really good. 5) Have fun and just play!!! Me personally i am a middle hitter and i like it best.

ask yourself how do you feel when your hitting from the left compare to right..i personally like hitting from right with right hand because i like to hit down the line..i dont know..it makes me feel better.. i think it doesnt matter if your right or left handed playing right..as long as your good enough rite? focus on what ever your comfortable at and you'll be a good player

Hi Yea I can hit with both my left and my right When I hit right side I usually use my left hand because I have more choices for line and angles But when I hit outside (left) I hit with my right hand for the same reasons unless i want really shapr angle. If you take a god look at a lot of D1 colleges a lot of the left handed players are right sides Sorry

yes-- right side is easier for lefties and left is easier for right handers bc your follow through after your approach goes into the court, whereas if you were on the right and youre right handed theres a likelihood that you could hit it out the of the court. think about it, when you make your approach, you do left right left then jump swing and your arm follows through to the left. since you are facing right [towards your setter] the ball is able to go easily inbounds. if you are an advanced player and can aim your hits [to a spot 1-6] then playing on the right side is not a problem. i am also a middle, but now and then my coach puts me on the right when i am needed there. it isnt "hard", you just have to think about it to make sure that you dont lose the point bc you hit the ball out. hope this helps!

yes playing right is a lot easier if u are left handed, but if u really want to play there just get better and dont worry about the 2 other people do ur own thing if u want it that bad and u practice and get better than them ur coach will notice and put u in instead of them.

I'm a left-handed opposite on my college club team. It is quite advantageous to be a lefty at the position because as a lefty you don't have to wait for the set to cross your body before you hit it making it easier and faster to go line or angle, but if you are a more effective hitter, blocker, server, and passer then your coach really has no choice but to play you. Good luck i see plenty of right-handed opposites who can be just as good.
