Any drills for volleyball?

Volleyball tryout drills?

  • I'm coaching a grade 9 OR grade 10 (JV) girls school volleyball team this fall (the school gave me a choice of teams and i'm not sure which i'm coaching yet), and I need to brush up on some of the drills that I know of. I've played volleyball all the way through junior high (middle school) and high school, so I know of the most common ones. I also coach a grade 7&8 girls club team, but I think some of those drills are going to be too easy. Are there any drills that you particularly like, or that are very good for developing skills/looking at the players' skills, both for tryouts and practices? What kind of skill level is/was your grade 9 volleyball team at? Examples: rotation (5-1, 4-2, 6-2), setter capability (can they set fairly well/backset), did anyone play libero, and anything else that you may find helpful to tell me. Thanks!

  • Answer:

my freshman team ran a 6-2 because both of our setters were pretty great. developing team skills for my team happened quickly. drills for that can be queens court (fast paced 3 on 3. losers are off the court, winners go to the 'queens' side, and new team comes on. helps with seeing who plays well together) or what my team called the sandwich drill (one girl lays at the end of the court perpendicular to the net and a second stacks on top of her parallel to the net and a third perpendicular again. slap the ball and immediately bounce it somewhere and the girl on the bottom has to touch it first and get 3 hits on the play. very fun and gets the heart rate up super quick cause of the running) hope it helps!

Have 3 lines at the back of the court..... Have them have 3 people on the court and you the coach throw the ball to one of them..... then they have to get 3 hits to get it back to you...... or they run how ever many laps around the gym that they needed to get hits......... This is what my coach did with us.... And if they dont call it they run anyways..... we won every game with this drill...... hope it helps!!! ~chelle~ [email protected] if you need more advice just contact me at this email addy!
