What should I know about Volleyball for Volleyball tryouts?

What should I know for volleyball tryouts?

  • Well, I'm a sophomore in high school and I figured it's time to get into some school activities. I DO NOT play any sports but I wanted to try out for my schools volleyball team. Tryouts are in 6 days and I would like to know any tips and pointers that could possibly help me make the team. Also, what should I wear and bring with me to tryouts. I also wanted to start eating healthier to prepare for and even to stay eating healthier after so if I could possibly get any help with that. Thank you!

Hi! I think its great your trying out for volleyball its a really great sport:) I have tried out for many volleyball teams, both school teams and club, and never been cut, so I will give you my advice on how to stand out at tryouts and make the team. 1. Be Loud and Call the Ball In volleyball, its important not to be meek or quiet, even if you are shy or nervous, you need to call the ball if its coming to you and always run after balls, and dive for them. Never give up until youve tried your hardest to get the ball in the air. If you call for a ball, get it. If another girl is coming for it too, it doesnt matter, you called it so you better pass it, even if you run into her. Because if you stop, you risk her stopping too because she heard you call for it, and the ball will hit the ground. Coaches hate that. 2.Listen to the Coach If the coach gives you advice on what you are doing wrong or what you could do differently, listen intently, nod show that you are listening and tell her that youll try her advice. Then, try it. If the coach sees that you listen to her advice and try your hardest, she will see that you are coachable, which means you arent stuck in your ways and can improve easily. NEVER get offended by a coach telling you what your doing wrong, or get cocky and not listen. 3. Know Your Basic Skills Make sure you show the basic skills of volleyball. If you dont know what they are, they are passing, hitting, setting, and serving. When passing, stay low, arms out in front of you and dont swing your arms, just guide the ball with your shoulders and legs. When hitting, do your approach (left-right-left) and swing both arms up when you jump, then bring your hand down ON TOP of the ball. When setting, stand with right foot forward, and hands right above and in front of your forhead. Push th ball with your arms and legs. When serving, stand with non dominant foot forward and toss the ball in fron of you, when you swing, step forward with same foot. As for what to wear at tryouts, all you need is: -volleyball shoes, court shoes, or just sneakers -kneepads -spandex shorts or short athletic shorts -loose tshirt thats easy to move in -plenty of water, and wear your hair in a ponytail I'm not a dietician, but make sure you get plenty of potassium and protein, and dont overload on unhealthy food so you can do your best. Good luck at tryouts! Hope this helped :)

It's great that you want to play volleyball! Since you don't really have experience, the most important thing for you at tryouts will be to have a good attitude and be coachable. When the coach gives you feedback or tips, smile, try your best to incorporate them, and say thank you. Show that you really want to learn the sport and the coach will be impressed. Wear a t-shirt and spandex at tryouts, with kneepads and volleyball shoes. Bring the necessary paperwork, lots of water, a good lunch, and an extra shirt if you tend to get sweaty. As for eating healthier, eat lots of carbs and protein. Try not to eat as much fat- lay off the chips and fast food. Eat a good breakfast and eat more small meals. This will help you not overeat and feel better. During tryouts, eat a bigger breakfast (toast, eggs, milk, cereal or wrap, etc) a couple hours before and bring something like a meat sandwich, fruit and veggies. You can have fried food during tryouts since you are burning most of it right after you eat. Hope this helps!
