What are some tips you can give me for volleyball tryouts?

Boys Volleyball Tryouts?

  • I have volleyball tryouts at my high school in a few days and I am very nervous. I am a sophmore and last year I had done a different sport but now Im doing volleyball because I have friends who played it last year. I really want to make the team but I have never played volleyball before! I am not the most athletic person but I always try hard and push myself. There are captain practices this week that my friend says I should go to so I can learn before tryouts but I dont want to look like a moron in from if upperclassmen. The day of sign ups the coaches told us straight up that 90% of people on the volleyball team didnt know how to play until they joined, but Im still nervous haha. Tryouts are 3 days long. What will they have us do? What are some reasons why someone wouldnt make the team? Are there any tips someone can give me? I really want to make the team because it seems like a fun sport. The one thing that makes me feel a little better is there are a lot of freshman trying out and they usually favor upperclassmen, but idk how this coach is. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

I just tried out for my high school boys team and made JV as a freshmen. I am assuming that what you call captain practices are what we call open gyms, where anyone is invited to come and try to play. I went to three open gyms and there were a lot of bad players and guys who had never played before. No one judged them because that is expected so don't be nervous. I was invited to tryout for varsity and since i was the only freshmen there i was super nervous. I regret that because i think it hurt my tryout, so don't be nervous. Also trying hard and always pushing yourself is something that coaches always look for. Reasons someone wouldn't make the team: LACK OF EFFORT coaches hate that, also getting down on yourself or other teammates after a mistake is very bad. Some good tips are to never let a ball hit the ground if it is within your reach, dive for it and just try to touch it, this shows great effort. Finally, if your coach said 90 percent of the people on the team didn't know how to play, and you are motivated, you will make it. Expect drills with coaches hitting balls at you and you passing them, hitting lines, blocking drills, and possibly a scrimmage at the end. Good Luck.

I would expect the coaches to make you do the basics really. What the coaches watch for is if that athlete is trying hard. The coaches normally hold open gyms for you to improve your knowledge of the game and skills. Just do your best. The drills that the coaches will probably do for tryouts are normally over hand serving, hitting lines, passing, and maybe a scrimmage. That's for JV Tryouts. For Varsity, normally it's the same thing except you do more of scrimmaging than doing the skills in drills. Hope you make the team :)

Well I'm a freshman but I'm captain of the freshman team(in reality I'm jv level) here's some tips 1) I always went to intramurals even if they were for varsity. Even though I was a freshman I still went to all intramurals 2) be calm and watch some videos on YouTube on how to basic things (like bumping, passing, ready position), have a likable personality, be calm, and be positive. As captain, I always have to be these things and even if we loose I always have to be positive. 3) are there intramurals at a local recreation center? Since the end of 8th grade I had been going to intramurals at a local recreation center and went from someone who didn't know volleyball to a jv level freshman (I now jump serve and can pass well). Volleyball shouldn't be too hard to get the basics down. Our Tryouts were basically like intramurals, expect A LOT of passing and serving drills. Then they will do more passing drills. Then they will do some spiking and conditioning. Someone wouldn't make the team for 2/3 reasons. 1) horrible attitude. A coach wants someone with potential, not a bad attribute talk back player. 2) ineligiblility. Whether it is from grades being bad or too many trips to the deans. 3) If someone is honestly bad. Most coaches will take new players because they have potential, but at some point the coach does need to cut it off. But volleyball is a very fun sport, its the thing I always look forward to after school now. Just listen, always go to practice and be your best. Good luck!
