How to become a better swimmer?

How can I become a better swimmer?

  • Hey, I'm a 15 year old guy. I've been swimming for pretty much my whole life. My coach always tells me how much potential I have. I am a very lazy person. I never want to go to practice. I avoid swimming. How can I get myself motivated to become a really good swimmer. I am fairly well for my age. I am a member of my highschool swim team, country club swim team, and a year round swim team (where I never go to practice) I really want to become a very strong simmer and like going to practice. I just struggle with going to practice. How can I get myself to like swimming more? Also, what are some things outside of swimming that can help my swimming improve. Tell me anything you got. Thanks

The motivation to be the best has to come from inside you, but external triggers can help. These could include being better than your teammates, trying to impress the opposite sex (or the same sex or whatever), making better friends on the team by not being a flake and letting them down, going to the olympics or getting scholarships. If you get tired of swimming pick one race a year and tailor your training for that race - like State or Junior nationals or whatever. Then take a month off here or there but train hard as you build towards the big race. That way you wont burn out. Working out with weights can help your swimming alot, but not by building big muscles. Instead do higher reps and more sets with slightly lower weights. Work on the triceps, deltoids, lats, and in your legs the quads, and hip flexors.

If you don't like swimming now nothing is going to change that immediately. I hated swim when I was your age because I swam it year round on multiple teams and was burned out. My best advice is to find what team you like swimming on most and quit the other two.

keep swimming, get a college scholarship. I wish I tried harder in sports and now i have over 50k debt, just graduated last month. Is that motivation for you? Anyway, swimming is sexy! work at getting faster and stronger, it's very attractive and healthy. Be the best you can be...when you are old and in a rocking chair...do you really want to think about when you were young and lazy? No, you want to think about those awards, those races where you kicked butt and you worked very hard to reach your goals. SET GOALS. Decide how many seconds you want to shave off your time for this season and work hard to achieve that!

Gym workouts with weights will help you become stronger and faster. Think of swim practice as not only practice but also as a social event. You may meet someone there you really like and develop a relationship. Get over being lazy! Only practice makes you a better swimmer. Try using a waterproof music ipod to supercharge your workout. If you get lost in the music, then maybe it won't be so boring. Get a swim partner also. That way you are accountable to show up, or ride to practice together. Or maybe you should try another water sport instead.Get out of the pool by trying water-skiing or wake-boarding or surfing. How about becoming a life guard? That way you are around the water and respect it more. Teaching swimming is also a lot of fun. You obviously love the water, so change it up a little bit.
