Where to scuba dive in Egypt?

Is it bad to scuba dive while congested?

  • im taking scuba classes to get certified. we have a pool dive tomorrow. the pool is 13 ft deep. ive been scuba diving once before and came to like it alot! i have been congested now for 4 or 5 days. i just got advil congestion relief and took it last night and this morning(i will take it more times today because you can take it every four hours). But my ears are clogged which,i know is bad for scuba diving. So, this beings me back to my question, can i scuba dive while im congested like this?

  • Answer:

Yes, it is bad and no, you should not dive while congested. You will not be able to equalize your ears which will result in pain and trauma. You will probably start to have problems at a depth of about 5 or 6 feet and by the time you reach 13 feet you will likely feel significant pain. Diving without being able to equalize risks damage to your middle ear and eardrum. If you can't equalize your ears on the surface today, chances are you won't be able to do it underwater tomorrow even with decongestants. It would be best to try to reschedule the pool sessions for another day.

very bad, your sinus goes into eustation tubes which connects to your ears. it can cause a squeeze which is very painfull or even rupture an ear drum. i hope this helps frank ps here is a link with more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eustachian_tube

Movie buff is right about the pain and depth part. You won't get far under the water at all. I work in the commercial diving industry and Sudafed and Claratin D are pretty popular with the divers. Make sure you get the non-drowsy kind and the 12 hour kind. What you REALLY don't want is the stuff to wear off when you're on the bottom. You could get a reverse squeeze which would be much more problematic than getting a squeeze on the way down. Take some 12 hour stuff about an hour and a half before your dive.

I agree totally with Movie on this. Chemical decongestants, no matter if they are non drowsy, will still give you rebound. Your congestion could in fact get worse after it's temporarily better. If you absolutely must take something, then only use a saline nasal mist. Zero rebound. It would be better that you simply put off the dives though.
