Passing out while swimming?
-
I'm doing an intense workout schedule. I'm pushing myself to the point where I get very lightheaded while swimming but I want to break through it. There is a lifeguard on duty, but if I pass out while swimming is there a very high chance I will drown? I'm not sure just how long a person can go under water and unconscious at the same time. I've hit a plateau and need to push through this, I am training to give the Navy Seal's program a try.

I understand. you need to remember that they will prepair you for this in indoc as well as phase 1 of BUD/s (pre drown-proofing) so be sure not a give yourself a pulmenary edema. and just remember, while doing the CSS to breath, their is a video and im at work and cant get to the link, but my SEAL motivator richard roberts has a good video for this on youtube. be sure to breath man, it is all about that. and dont go so fast that you cant keep a good pace.

The average person can hold their breath for about 30 seconds. but with training and diligent hard work, its possible to hold your breath for 4 minutes and even above. I teach swimming in a secondary school and I can actually do this. I've met synchronize swimmers who can hold their breath longer. You can actually pass out while swimming, but drowning takes a while so if you have a friend or lifeguard who knows exactly what you are doing and can quickly come to your rescue in case of a maxing out then you would have done all you need to do to secure your life during this exercise. Its important to break through our glass ceilings, so AA go for it.

I was always told that an average person can go 5minutes without oxygen before there will be considerable brain damage. I do actually have some doubts about that figure - I think it's based on children, studies have shown that it's actually somewhat temperature dependent and someone of your level of fitness should be able to go a longer period of time before suffering from the same effects. However, passing out underwater is never a good thing - it's got a fairly high rate of leading to drowning, or at least near drowning or secondary drowning, which would have huge consequences on your training schedule. I'd recommend just having a chat to the lifeguard before you start your workout - let them know what the deal is and tell them that you're pushing yourself and you're a little worried about it. At least that way they will be consciously aware of what you're doing, and chances are keep a closer eye on you. Even better, grab a mate/relative/someone else to come down and train with you. You can keep an eye on each other and respond immediately if anything does happen. If you do pass out underwater, the sooner you're out of the water, the less likely it is that you'll have any problems as a result of it.
