How do I convince my mom to allow me to learn how to swim?

• I am a 15 year old girl who wants to learn how to swim, but my mom won't let me. The reason why is that nobody in my family knows how to swim, except for my dad, but he doesn't live with us. Since I live in the same city as my dad's side of the family, out of 19 people, only like 6 people know how to swim and probably only 2 of them know CPR, but my relatives that know CPR, we don't usually go swimming or anything like that with them. I watch kids play in kiddie pools all of the time and since they're growing up, they're more likely are going to be going to water parks more often. So the main reason why I want to learn how to swim is because not many of the people in my family knows how to and in case of an emergency and no one is around to help, I can do it. I also plan on taking a 6 hour course to learn how to do CPR on both adults and children at the end of this month. Plus, majority of my friends know how to swim and they're always inviting me to come over and swim and I always reject and when I tell them I don't know how to swim, they tell me that they'll teach me, but I know my mom would never approve of it. I asked my mom earlier if I could take some lessons and she said I don't need to learn how to swim and that since I have asthma, I can't hold my breath long enough to swim. How do I convince my mom to allow me to swim? By the way, I also want to be able to teach all of my siblings and cousins how to swim because children nowadays needs to know how to.   Of course you should learn to swim! It's amazing you are 15 and still can't swim. How can your mother be against it? Swimming can save your life and the life of others. It also makes good exercise and is fun. You shouldn't have to say no to the invitations from your friends. One day they might get tired of inviting you when you never come, and that'll be your mother's fault? :-( The fact that you're asthmatic is no reason. On the contrary: swimming is a good way to exercise in spite of this. You train your muscles in the water because of it's resistance to your movements but still you don't have to work so hard at it that you will have a hard time breathing.
