Who is hiring in San Diego?

How competitive is the San Diego Lifeguard hiring process?

  • I have read all the details on the website in regards to the swim test and the regional academy at Miramar. I am just curious if anyone has been through the hiring process? I imagine it is very competitive, how many people on average test....40 or 500? Thanks!

  • Answer:

I would assume that it's competitive year round but especially during Spring and Summer when students are looking for a Summer job. Living in a coastal city you have more swimmers, divers, and surfers to compete with. There's been some recent problems over lifeguards who want to break from the city employment over union issues. Union dues are almost $60 a month for top lifeguards! More interesting stats: "While top-paid lifeguards earn around $70,000 annually, roughly two-thirds of the 300 lifeguards are seasonal and earn much less. But even veteran lifeguards believe they earn substantially less than others doing similar work in police and fire departments." - http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2009/apr/29/city-light-1/
