Where can I swim professionally after college?

Can a beginner join the swim team in college?

  • I love to swim! and I want to join the swim team in college; I am really pumped up to join. All experience I have is ocassional swimming trips to pools or lakes; I always swam my *** off; I love it and I would beat everyone at racing; I last a long time swimming and I could do it all day if I wanted to. With hard work and dedication and being at every practice, because this is what i plan to do, I think I can travel and compete with the team; I could be a part of the team! What is your opinion?

  • Answer:

It will depend on the school you attend. If you go to a community college then it is likely that you could be a part of the team. If you go to a low level Division 2 or Div 3 school, the coach might allow you to swim. However, many schools will not sacrifice the space in a lane for someone who has no experience. Plus, although a college coach teaches his/her swimmers the strokes, the teaching is not from 'ground zero' ... it is a matter of refinement. Based on what you wrote, it sounds as if you have some talent. However, something you've not learned is how to compete at a high level and much of that is developed through age group and high school swimming. So ... in order to participate you must first register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Go to ncaa.com and look at the bottom of the page. You'll see "elegibility center" ... click on it and follow the directions. It will cost you $65 to $70. This MUST be done before you even talk with a coach. Once you've completed your eligibility, then start to call coaches at schools you'd be interested in attending. You'll get a whole lot more information that you can use.

Let's see...... Do you know how to swim all four strokes (freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke)? The reason I'm asking this is because you said that all the experience you have is occasional swimming at a pool or lake. Now, if you swim at a pool or lake, you usually just use freestyle (or breaststroke, since it's a life skill). You probably never used backstroke or butterfly. When you join a swimming team, you have to practice all 4 strokes. Not only do you have to know how to do freestyle, you have to know how to do butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke. ------ Also, college swimming is pretty competitive. The people on the college swim teams most likely practiced swimming in a 50m pool with lane lines, not in a lake. ------ Conclusion: You might not be good enough.

For a D1 school, hell no For a D2 school, very, very unlikely For a D3 school, still unlikely but possible. You would have to learn proper stroke technique and learn what's allowed and what gets you disqualified. It's not something that you just pick up overnight.
