Can I Go Scuba Diving Without A License?

  • Me and my daughter are going to the Marco Islands in Florida over spring break, and I was wondering if we need a license or have to take mandatory classes before we go. Or if there is an age limit, my daughter is going to be 15 by the time we go, would we be able to do it? And if we have to take lessons, can we take them there? How many would we need? Are they free?

  • Answer:

A reputable dive shop will not rent you equipment without certification. However you have a number of options: It is possible to get certified in a week. Spring break doesn't look like a break by doing it that way, though. You and your daughter will be in class, studying, or in the water a lot. (My wife and I got our Advanced Open Water cards during a "vacation") You could sign up for a class before then. That's the easiest in terms of scheduling. Or - if you aren't sure whether you even want to become divers, you could connect with a dive shop and go on a guided tourist dive (also called "Discover SCUBA") Go to http://www.padi.com , click on "Keep Diving" and then find the link at the bottom of page to locate dive centers. You'll find there aren't any listed on Marco Island. The closest shops are a little north in Naples.

Yes, and no. If you were to take a "Discover Sucba" Class, you can dive with an instructor, after a short class. This is also called a resort course. At 15, your daughter is old enough. You would both need to pass the requirements for the full class, for the swim, and tread. Class length varies from school to school. My class was two weekends, with a lot of home book work. Tests, quizzes, class review, confined dives, and open water dives all need to be done with the instructor. Class cost also varies from location to location. Ask a local shop for their prices.
