How old do you have to be to become a Life Guard?

  • Hey! I wanted to know what age you have to be to become a life gaurd I have heard 14-16? And you have to swim Well (I Do) and take A class (I would) I am 13 now, and next summer I want to look for a job. (if any avaliable or labor laws don't change) I would work at youngs jersey Dairy but we havge to drive far and with the gas prices I wouldn't make much. Thanx!!!

    Most places require that you are 15. The red cross program (which is probably the course you will need to get certified so you can get a job) requires that you are 15 years old. Some pools will not hire you until you are 16, but this varies from state to state, and pool to pool. You may want to look into the guard start program that the red cross offers, it will give you a start into what lifeguarding will be like, and what skills you will need to learn to become certified. Well there are a lot of different courses you can take to prepare you if you aren't of age yet. In the lifesaving society there's the Rookie, Ranger, Star program that teaches you the basics of first aid and the basics of being a lifeguard. Once you turn 14 you will be able to start with your Bronze Medallion. Some people start with Bronze Star but I never did. From there you'll go to your Bronze Cross. I know at the old pool that I worked at in Quebec allowed you to "Assistant" lifeguard with your Bronze Cross which would mean you would be able to guard at the age of 14 but to fully lifeguard you would need your Nationals (NLS) which you have to be 16 to take.

well in california i know that you have to be 16 to lifegaurd a pool, like without anyone else there, not as a junior lifegaurd or anything like that. and you have to be 18 to be at a beach.

To take the classes you have to be 15. But some pools want you to be 16, but many places do hire at 15
