Work on your upper body strength - stronger arms mean stronger strokes. The longer the stroke, the more you will move through the water - the more powerful the stroke, the faster you will move. Eliminating drag and improving your speed can be accomplished in three ways: By balancing your body. Our feet and legs tend to sink because of body composition, an effect called "body torque." Watch someone like Michael Phelps swimming - his body is flat out in the water and he looks like a fish in his lower body movements. For every increase in torque there's a linear increase in energy cost for swimming, which causes the greatest amount of drag. So the greatest opportunity to reduce drag is by reducing torque, or balancing your body so the hips and legs ride as high as the upper body. It helps to have strong central core muscles for this - so work on abs and that sort of thing. By making your body longer. Any time you increase the length of a vessel at the water line, you reduce drag. So stretch it out. By turning your body on its side. A body on its side allows the water to slip by more easily than a body on its stomach, again reducing drag. I'll attach a couple of links you might find helpful. Good luck and smoke those cousins! :-)

Do it this way, to gain an upper hand(foot, leg?)of your cousins: 1...Find an opportunity to get the fastest cousin, do an arms-- and legs--only swim. Decide which style. Both stand at same distance from the side of the pool. Then tell your cousin to swim towards the side only with arms, legs trailing behind. Count how many strokes she/he manages. Then it's your turn. Do it with the legs-only and count the no. of kicks. Note the difference of the no. of arm pulls and leg kicks both of you performed. If you use 25-50% more, this gives an indication that your strokes are not done accurately. 2...Get your coach or some other friend, relative really good in swimming for proper techniques of the style that you would be competing with your cousins. Once you get these mastered, you may just need a little strength and stamina, not only to beat your cousins, but you also be on the school's or nation's team! Winning is fun and will keep you in super high spirits! So go kick some butts and give them a surprise!

My swim instructor is always telling me that when you bring your arm around you should be stretching it out as far as possible and each stroke should be pushing you farther. Also when you bring your arm around put your thumb in first. A good way to practice is to count how many strokes it takes you to get to the other side of the pool. Then try to get a few less on the way back. Ex: you get twenty five one way so try to get twenty strokes on the way back. Hoped that helped :)
