How to become a better swimmer?

How do I exercise to become a better swimmer?

  • I would say I'm a decent swimmer. We have practice for the team every Tuesday and Thursday, but starting after fall break, its all week. I couldn't swim at all the first time I went to practice. Its now the 9th practice and I'm doing a lot better than before. I want to know a better technique on how to swim. We have a 25 yard pool and 6 lanes, going to 12 feet deep. I can swim a 25 but halfway through 50's I always get tired! Its annoying! I think I'm doing everything the coach is telling me to do. He says it'll never get easier and that's a little discouraging. I practice at the Y when I can but I can;t swim a 50. I'm pushing myself though and I'm determined to be on the team. Do you guys have any helpful tips?

  • Answer:

The ONLY way to get better at swimming is to SWIM! Nothing prepares you better than swimming. It's going to take months for you to be able to keep up with your team mates. Just push yourself and JUST DO IT! Make it a goal to never stop in the middle of the set. You should be able to swim a 50 if you can swim 25 yards. I still feel tired after only doing 100 yards but I push myself and end up going miles. Your coach is right, it gets better and in no time you'll be swimming 4000 yards in one session! Swimming is a sport that takes time. Don't expect an overnight solution. If you stay dedicated to the sport you'll be good in no times. Trust me I used to be in your situation.

swim swim swim swim swim until you get the technique right after that its endurance training and building muscle mostly and you coach only telling the truth... sadly.... swimming takes dedication and hard work. its you, YOU verse yourself and the clock. You really need to want to get better, not that you don't think that otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question, but hard work is the key!

Guidance

You need to swim laps and when you dont have access to the pool, then try running, squats, and running up and down stairs. This will streangthen your legs to be better at kicking. Lift weights and do push ups to build muscle in the arms.
