High school diving questions?

High School Swim Team?

  • I am an 8th grader and I want to in the swim team in high school. I have a few questions for those of you who have been on a swim team: 1. Do you have to jump of the Diving board (I am sooooooo sooooooo sooooo scared of jumping off and could never do it even if something pushed me believe me its happened before) 2. At meets do you race with people that are at the same level as you or is it random. 3. What do we need to swimming. I know that we need swimsuits (I have a TYR one i'm a girll so), a swimming cap, goggles, and a towel anything else? 4. How long is practice and do you have it in the morning or fater noon. How often do we have practice everyday or everyother day? 5. Do you have to jog to warm up? Like running. Or do we have to do weights? 6. When your swimming laps do you have to be able to do a flip turn? Or do you dive off those tiny little ledge things on the edge of the pool? (at practice and at a meet) 7. For swimming do you have to be able to dive or is that only for the diving team? 8. How much laps (non-stop back and forth) do you normally have to do during a meet? thx so much in advance

  • Answer:

    1. Do you have to jump of the Diving board (I am sooooooo sooooooo sooooo scared of jumping off and could never do it even if something pushed me believe me its happened before) In a high school swim meet in the United States, there are 11 events. Only one of the events is for those who specialize in diving. All other events are swimming races and do not use the spring boards. 2. At meets do you race with people that are at the same level as you or is it random. At most high schools, there is a JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) and VARSITY teams. The JV team is a developmental team for beginners. The abilities vary tremendously. The varsity team is for those who have experience. 3. What do we need to swimming. I know that we need swimsuits (I have a TYR one i'm a girll so), a swimming cap, goggles, and a towel anything else? You have all the equipment you need to get started. 4. How long is practice and do you have it in the morning or fater noon. How often do we have practice everyday or everyother day? Morning practices are not normally required of JV swimmers. JV swimmers usually practice only in the afternoons and do an abbreviated practice compared to the Varsity. Like every other sport, JV swimmers practice everyday. Afternoon practices last, depending on your skill/ability, one to two hours. The better you get, the more you are allowed to practice. 5. Do you have to jog to warm up? Like running. Or do we have to do weights? Weights may or may not be required. However, lifting weights is very good for you and helps you to swim faster and be stronger. Weights are not used for warm-up. You warm-up with combinations of exercises, stretching and swimming (starting slow). 6. When your swimming laps do you have to be able to do a flip turn? Or do you dive off those tiny little ledge things on the edge of the pool? (at practice and at a meet) You will be taught how to do flip turns. As a coach, once I teach my high school swimmers to do flip turns they are expected, when appropriate, to do flip turns 100% of the time as doing so prepares you for racing. If you don't practice 1000s of flip turns, you won't do your turns correctly when you race. The "tiny little ledge things" are called STARTING BLOCKS. You will be taught how to properly use the starting blocks for racing. 7. For swimming do you have to be able to dive or is that only for the diving team? Again, one of the "swimming" events is diving. However, the those who dive only practice diving and do not do swim practice. As a swimmer, unless you have specific training in diving, you won't do the diving event. Sometimes a diver might do a swim race. 8. How much laps (non-stop back and forth) do you normally have to do during a meet? A high school pool is 25 yards long. The shortest race is 50 yards (two lengths which is one lap). There are 100 yard (4 lengths), 200 yard and 500 (20 lengths) races. There are also relays and the farthest an individual swims on a relay (4 people on a relay) is 100 yards. All of the other answers are basically good. However, all of them have errors in them. That is why I replied.

Other answers

1. Do you have to jump of the Diving board (I am sooooooo sooooooo sooooo scared of jumping off and could never do it even if something pushed me believe me its happened before) You drive off of blocks mostly. For some strokes you start in the pool. You don't dive off the diving board. 2. At meets do you race with people that are at the same level as you or is it random. Your coach decides what events you swim. But in high school swimming, they don't arrange it by skill level or anything, it's everything is determined by time. They don't intentionally put all the fast swimmers together or all the slow ones together. Although for some meets you have seeding based on your personal best time for that given event. Let's say you have 16 swimmers in an event, and 8 swimmers compete against each other at one time, So you'll have two heats, The fastest four swimmers will compete against the slowest four swimmers (not necessarily on the same team or anything, it's all arranged, by times) in the fist heat, and the swimmers with the middle-fastest times will compete in the 2nd heat. Then they fastest 8 swimmers of the two heats ( fastest four from the first and second heats) go on to the final race for that event. 3. What do we need to swimming. I know that we need swimsuits (I have a TYR one i'm a girll so), a swimming cap, goggles, and a towel anything else? Water bottle, probably some warmups, ipod. A deck of playing cards can help pass the time between events. 4. How long is practice and do you have it in the morning or fater noon. How often do we have practice everyday or everyother day? Around here during the season, there are practices every day, some times two a day. One in the early mornings 5:30-7:30 AM, and then again from 4:00-6:00 PM. 5. Do you have to jog to warm up? Like running. Or do we have to do weights? You'll probably do some jogging at dry land practices. You probably won't spend too much time in the weight room compared to other sports, any lifting you do will be low weight/high reps. 6. When your swimming laps do you have to be able to do a flip turn? Or do you dive off those tiny little ledge things on the edge of the pool? (at practice and at a meet) Yeah, knowing how to do a flip turn is mandatory since most events are much longer in distance than the length of the pool. 7. For swimming do you have to be able to dive or is that only for the diving team? It's expected that you know how to dive off the starting blocks, but you don't need to know how to do a half gainer or anything. 8. How much laps (non-stop back and forth) do you normally have to do during a meet? Varies greatly on the event. As little as 1 length for a short sprint event like the 50 free (2 lengths on a short course) or as much as 30 lengths for the 1500m (long course). The events be as brief as 25-30 seconds or as long as 20 minutes.

1. You only jump off off the board for fun at practices unless you join the diving team. Although you will have to go off the block. 2. Most meets you swim with people your speed. At higher level meets like the whole state, you could swim with some of the fastest (which CAN give you an advantage) 3. You will need everything you listed, plus the team might require you to buy additional items such as a team suit and cap. 4. It depends on the school but I would generally say most practices will be about an hourish 5. Warm-ups are in the pool. Your coach will tell you in advance if you are going to run for warm up. (I've never had to) 6. The little ledge things are called blocks and yes you will have to go off them unless you have issues with that then you can go off the side of the pool. Flip turns make your swimming faster but its not required. Also your coach can teach you. 7. You have to go off blocks but not the board, thats diving. 8. Depends on what you race. You could do as little as just down and back or as much as down and back 10 times. Also you will need to warm up for races which could be down and back about 5 times.

1. Yes, you do dive from the board, mostly in meets. 2. It should be people on the same level as you, otherwise it wouldn't be fair. 3. Swimsuit, goggles, cap, towel, shampoo, conditioner, brush, hair tie, extra clothes. 4. I usually swim 2 hours a day, or an hour and a half if I'm really tired. 5. My warm up is usually push-ups, sit ups, lunges, stretches... that kind of stuff 6. For practices you dont normally have to flip turn, but for meets, your gonna wanna know how to do one, dont worry, I'm sure they'll teach you before you go to a meet. 7. You do need to know how to dive. 8. You have different events.. Usually I have 4 or 5 and they are 4 laps each... so about 12 laps.
