What size fins should I get so I can wear diving boots?
-
I am new to freediving and I have been using diving fins and boots that aren't my size (I have size 12 to 12.5 feet (depends on brand) and my fins are medium size I don't know the size but my boots are size 10 and say large on them) so I decided to buy new gear but I don't know what size fins to get so I can also wear diving boots, do I get size 12 or 13?

Answer:
Your question is very hard to answer because there are so many variables. You say that you have been using diving fins so far while freediving. I presume that you mean scuba diving fins, such as Scubapro Jets or similar scuba-type open-heel fins with spacious foot pockets that can accommodate any kind of diving boots, no matter how bulky. You don't say whether you're planning to purchase scuba-style open-heel fins for freediving or whether you want to buy long-bladed full-foot fins, which are the fins of preference of most freedivers. If the latter, you are bound to find that the closed-heel foot pockets are much less generously sized and that finding a pair that will accommodate bulky diving boots will be much more of a challenge. Your foot size is also towards the maximum offered by freediving fin manufacturers. When factoring in the additional bulk of diving boots, you will undoubtedly have to consider getting fins one or two sizes larger than you would wear barefoot. With thin neoprene socks or booties, you might get away with fins one size bigger, but anything with a thick sole is bound to require bigger sizes. The only way you can be sure is to try on pairs of fins with your boots on, otherwise it will be guesswork. Remember too that fins don't just vary in terms of foot length but also in respect of width and arch height too. As you yourself have pointed out, there isn't a standard foot pocket for a given foot size and experimentation is essential. Let's take the idiot factor out of this. Fins are expensive, you don't want to get the wrong size. If you do they will be too loose and maybe fall off or too big and cramp your toes. Either way they will be inefficient and your dive will suffer. Go to the dive shop. Get the right size booties, or socks, then try on the fins with the fins or booties on. If you want booties then you have to get open heel, if you want closed heel it's socks or barefoot. So you see there are big differences, you need to try them on.
