How to avoid cramps when swimming?

What do you do if you get leg cramps while swimming in the ocean?

  • Well I go to a beach where you can swim in from the side rocks into the ocean and through to the flagged section of the beach, its about a 400m swim. It is exhausting, but you never give up because you can't, it forces you to give your all. But I'm worried because yesterday I got cramps in the back of my lower legs in the musles my shins while swimming in a laned pool. I worried what would happen if I got cramps while doing the ocean swim? It would be really dangerous I would think, because when I got the cramps the pain was excrutiating and I did spasm movements with my legs out of pain. So I was wondering what should you do if you get cramps while doing an ocean swim, or should I be doing it at all?

  • Answer:

There is no reason why you shouldn't swim in the ocean but it is a matter of trying to prevent the cramp. Bananas and potatoes help prevent cramp as they contain lots of Potassium which is used by muscles to work properly. Also, keeping hydrated before and after swimming is crucial to prevent cramps and stitches. Making sure that you are breathing frequently enough helps prevent muscles from cramping because of a lack of oxygen. Hope I helped =D

I used to get cramps in my legs all the time while at swim practice. My coach always yelled at me and told me to eat more potassium. Bananas work good, and so does orange juice. as long as you eat foods with potassium in it, you will not get cramps while swimming, and you will be fine swimming in the ocean, or anywhere else for that matter.

First of all, don't panic. You can use your arms to just dogie paddle. You can tread water like this for hours if necessary. Even though it hurts, try to keep your legs in motion. This will help the blood circulation and help you recover quicker. Eat some bananas or oranges every week for potassium. Even if it is a real screamer, you can still swim with a leg cramp. Slowly.

if you get it your feet try and stop and massage or push your feet back with your hand if you can push your foot againsta rock until the pain goes
