Swimming: How many lengths to start off with?

A good swimming regime to get fitter?

  • I'm saving up for a gym pass, but I'm completely unfit and have no idea how many lengths is considered good to build up to. So say if I went swimming 3 or 4 times a week, how many lengths should I start out doing, how much should I increase to each time I go, and how much should I ideally build up to, to be moderately fit? Also in between swimming I will start using the actual gym and walk a few miles a week. Thank you x

Depending on the quality of your technique, you should be able to do between 2000m - 3000m in an hour. Aim for about 1500m - 2000m an hour for the first week or so.
