How to not get your hair wet with a swimming cap?

SWIMMING: My cap doesn't prevent my hair from getting wet.?

  • I take care of my hair as if it were a piece of silk, but i also go swimming everyday, in a chlorinated pool. My swimming cap is a speedo one, which although it was pretty pricey (£15) it doesn't do what its supposed to do; prevent my hair from getting wet. I should also add that i put my hair up in a bun before putting my cap on. Anyway, everyday it getting soaking wet, and i'm afraid that the chlorine will completely ruin my hair. Is there any trick to making sure that my hair won't get wet? I also wear swimming goggles, which i have to wear as i currently have conjunctivitis, and i would like to avoid further eye infections. ALSO, i currently have a cut on my heel... does this mean i'm going to breakout in warts due to being in a public pool and having broken skin?

Well, the main purpose of swim caps is to make your body more streamlined and help you swim faster, rather than prevent your hair from getting wet. Although I wish it was better at preventing wetness. It is very hard to keep your hair completely dry, you are swimming in water! :P Even when wearing the water resistant caps, the tiny pores in the cap will let some water in. I'm not sure what type of swim cap you have (speedo sells some non-water-resistant ones too) but I recommend a rubber or silicone cap. I personally prefer silicone, it is more comfortable but rubber may prevent more water from coming in. Just make sure it fits snugly(no huge air spaces) but not too tight or it'll come off (I know this... from experience =/ ). And try to get the swim cap to cover your ears, that helps. To prevent hair damage from chlorine, try some leave in conditioner before you go in the pool, and make sure to wash your hair right after you swim! It's probably not a good idea to go swimming with eye infections, even with goggles and chlorinated water.. but always make sure your goggles are airtight. I had quite a bad cut before an important swim class once ( glass, ouch), I put a waterproof bandaid over it and used some polysporin before and afterwards. I was fine. :) Edit: Since the cut is on your heel, wear pool shoes on deck. It should be a habit though, even without a cut, because you never know what kind of bacteria and stuff there is on the floor.

Some ideas see the sites below. double cap or make a swim band and bubble cap over it . Use a head sized bubble cap with strap. These tips do work but one cap alone wont do it.The trick is getting your hair up, pulling the swim band or inner silicon cap low over your ears and the capping it off with the snug bubble cap.

The cap is not to prevent your hair from water it is for you to go faster.

Most caps don't. ;) Buy a special shampoo that gets rid of chlorine. That's what I do.

i thought the purpose of the cap was to get hair out of the way, not necessarily keep it dry

Although it may seem as though your cap should prevent your hair from getting wet, its main purpose it to cut down the resistance the hair creates when it is flowing freely in the pool, so it is not designed to keep it dry... but a few tips may help 1. Get a smaller cap.. although this says jr. cap the fit may be tighter on your head http://www.metroswimshop.com/product.7510063.htm 2. Put your hair up in a bun on the top of your head 3. If the water still continues to get in the cap and make your hair wet this shampoo removes chlorine from your hair, so the harmful chemicals are taken out:) http://www.metroswimshop.com/showDetailAction.do?productID=Ultra_Swim_Replenishing for the eye problems once your eyes get better (the conjunctivitis had gone away) GET NEW GOGGLES.. so the bacteria does not get back in your eyes again!! as for the cut, make sure you always wear flip flops on the deck, this way the bacteria will not touch your skin, only the shoes.. and make sure you get a waterproof bandage as well as liquid bandage to put on it before you swim. put the liquid bandage on it first, let dry.. then put the waterproof bandage on to secure nothing will get in it..at home put antibiotic ointment on it or pour hydrogen peroxide on it too! GOOD LUCK

Caps are not intended to keep your hair dry. They are to keep your hair under control while you swim, and to cut down on resistance. Chlorine can affect your hair. To minimize this, rinse your hair with fresh water before you put your cap on. By saturating your hair with fresh water, the hair shafts will absorb less pool water. Then when you are done swimming, use an anti-chlorine shampoo like UltraSwim. There are many different brands. By all means wear goggles if you have conjunctivitis (pink eye). In fact, it is very contageous. I'm not sure you should even be in the pool at all. As for the cut, it should be covered to swim. Wear pool shoes. Don't go barefoot. Plantar's warts are caused by a virus that can be picked up in pubic places like pools and locker rooms. You don't need to have a cut on your foot. The viruse can spread, cut or not. Some people are very susceptible to plantar's warts. You may or may not be one of them. Always wear shoes in the locker room and showers.
