Do people take swimming lessons to improve their health?

I hugely disagree with jackie, although i am happy she enjoys swimming :) I am a competitive swimmer and have been for numerous years, i am now in great shape and so are all the people i swim with, if you do take up swimming to get fit, you can not merely do a few lengths or sit in the pool though, you really do need to put in some effort, and swimming is very difficult and takes alot of energy out of you, my heart rate now is circa 50 bpm which is very good, (not trying to sounds big headed). furthermore Michael phelps is able to eat 12,000 calories a day to maintain his fitness. swimming is very difficult if taken seriously but if you do almost every muscle in your body will benefit, plus circulatory systems etc. i highly recommend it and if you want some simple sets to start you up, email me :) good luck

Not necessarily lessons, but many take up swimming in general for health reasons. Swimming using proper strokes exercises almost all the muscles in your body simultaneously as well as your heart and lungs through breathing and distance. It has been called the best sport for general fitness.

Well swimming is more of a hobby/activity then sport. To me swimming is a fun way to lose wait. My goal when i swim is not to lose wait or help my health although it does. It makes you stronger and you should always now how to swim in case of an emergency for example an airplane crash over sea. When i swim i think of how fun it is. It is a good way to become stronger and it does help for losing weight. I would say most people swim to have fun and get exercise. I don't think when people swim they specifically think of something they are trying to prevent or improve. They just want to stay healthy. Hope I helped solve any confusion.
