Calories for swimming?

How many calories are burned when swimming in 25 yd laps?

  • I recently started swimming, 2 hours every day, in my local natatorium (pool). It's 25 yds across one way, and I want to get a good workout. I swim rather slowly at the moment, freestyle laps, I guess you could say. I've been to so many websites and every single one says something different. Fitday says 2 hours would only burn 1400 calories. Another fitness magazine said I'd be burning 2800 calories. Which is more accurate? Thanks!

<revised> That changes things a bit. Wow, 65 pounds lost already. That's fantastic and keep up the GREAT work! At 365, one of the websites says 2400+ calories. But you know what? The 65 that you've already lost is what is important. Obviously something is working! Stay on your routine, get lots of support, take small steps and you'll reach your goal. Kudos to you! <original post> It's about 1100-1400. 2800 is way, way too high. Important factors include weight, and speed. I did a google search of "calories burned swimming" and checked the first three sites and they were all around 1400 for 2 hours of swimming. Some of them were only for 10 minutes, so I multiplied results by 12. Two good sites were: http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist3.htm http://www.self.com/health/activity/calculators/swimming Keep up the good work.

Good job on your hard work. I have been competitively swimming for 10 or so years, its a great full body workout. Keep up the good work and you will get better. The reason the calorie counts differ so much is because you have to take into account the pace you are swimming at. Work hard and you will be able to swim faster and longer distances and lose more weight. Keep it up!

If you swim for two hours, then I think you can burn 2800 calories. It actually depends how fast you swim. The faster you swim, the more calories you burn, because you work more. But since you swim slow, I guess you'll probably burn about 2000 calories.
