Questions about Triathalons and Masters Swimming after/during college?
-
I am currently a highschool athlete who is mainly focused on academics when i go on to college and I also don't feel I have the talent to compete at a college level but i still enjoy the sport of swimming (and all sports actually) and would like to continue to practice them or compete even if not at a high level I have heard a little about Masters Swimming and also about competing in Triathalons. My one question is, are these activities I can continue beyond college, into my adulthood? Or is it a little pointless to do these activities?

Answer:
I think both can be very rewarding if you have the time to devote to training and the money to travel to compete. I would go with triathlons because you're likely to have more competitions and they'll be closer to home. I was a Master's Swimmer for a few years and didn't really get anything out of it. It's not like you get sponsored, become a household name, or win anything. You pay a yearly membership due to work out with others at a local pool with a coach. I never understood what qualifications the coaches had. In the end it seemed pointless to pay to work out with them when you can work out on your own anytime. There was no focus on ability levels either. Turn outs for competitions were generally small. The only benefit was insurance coverage for sanctioned meets and training. Having trained with a world class swimmer and studying coaching techniques and sports medicine it seemed to me a lot [not all] of members had no idea what they were doing and were plagued with poor techniques and low self-esteem. That's just my experience though. You are still young enough to do so much more with your life. Triathlons are great and there's nothing to stop you from competing in swimming at a national and international level. You're sooo young - don't discount the Olympics. Summary: Institutions may be pointless but sports never are. They keep us active and healthy and in love with life. Follow your heart.
