Swimming: How many lengths to start off with?

What is a swimming club like?

  • I'm 13 and I'm about to go to an amateur swimming club, I can swim butterfly, backstroke, front crawl and breastroke. I can only swim 15 lengths before getting tired and I CAN'T DIVE!!!! I can tred water for 3 mins and can do a somersalt in water. I want to know what is it like when you join a swimming club, where would I get put (is it with a bunch of 7 year olds?) and do you just swim lengths etc. I DON'T WANT TO COMPETE UNTIL I FEEL READY! So would they understand? I just want to swim and get fitter then when I feel ready start to compete. Would they tell you when you're ready or can you decide?

    You'll do fine. You would practice with a bunch of 12-14 year olds and race with 12-14 year olds from other teams. At that age you mostly swim laps and do different drills. You sound like a pretty good swimmer, I've been in a competitive swim team for 6 years and I still can't flip-turn. Competing is easy. You'll only have to do 75 yards or less. Who cares if you get 1st place or not? It's just fun and friendly competition. If you have swim meets you will have to sometimes drive somewhere else, and bring something to sit on along with your belongings. Swimming is fun, I guarantee you'll make some friends, and don't stress! It'll be great.

I'm sure you'll do fine. You sound like a pretty good swimmer to me. You'll most likely be put with you age group. For me, I didn't compete until 6 months later and they understood. However, it doesn't really matter if you win, 'cause it's about having fin.

When I was in my swimming club it was training not racing. We would have to do lengths but it wasn't a competition. If your swimming club is an amateur one like you said as well then they are most likely a lot worse at swimming than you. Good Luck!
