Do you think one can learn How to Swim as an adult?or its harder & Hopeless?

My friend Cookie has wanted to learn to how to swim ever since he was a young boy,but due to the fact his family could not afford it and no approve of it he never learned.Now as an adult in his 30s he wants to learn Do you think one can learn how to swim as an adult?or its harder & Hopeless?He is about 6ft 4 and He heard when youre this tall your less coordinated with your hands of feet ?Is it something you start as a child or it becomes extremely hard..I know its not impossible but is it justa hopeless case?

    As a former Water Safety Instructor - you can learn to swim even as an adult of 6'4. You have to not be afraid of the water and willing to listen to the instructor and not be afraid the instructor will let you fall or drop. There should be adult swim lessons either at your local Y - one of the local schools with a pool or the local community center if they have a pool. If not, try to seek out a lifeguard who has taught swimming and ask for private lessons. For the breathing part - you can start that in a pool or lake by putting your arms forward above your head (being bent over at the waist). Then start practicing by putting your face into the water, blowing air out through your nose. Then turn your head to the side to take a breath through the mouth. Put face back in water and continue exercise. You will then coordinate your arm movement with the breathing exercise. You could also get a kick board that you use to hold on with your hands/arms and your body is out behind you and you use your full leg to kick. Good Luck

No, It is absolutely possible. I think it is admirable that you are trying to help a friend like that! I taught my cousin to swim, and I am confident anyone can. I'm not sure where you will go to practice, but make sure it is in shallow water, first thing to try is having the person float on their back, you can assist at first, this my take some time. After that you can teach them how to "tread water". From there, it will be a breeze. Be patient and stay focused. It will be FUN!!!

It's entirely possible to learn to swim as an adult. My wife's older sister was in her late 30s when she learned to swim. I was in a class with a lady from the UK that learned to swim at 59. If anything, an adult is more likely to be able to consciously choose to set aside their fears about water. There's little you can to do rationalize with a kid.

it will defiantly be harder for the fact he is older and arthitis and all. but his height wont do anything. like look at micheal phelps, he is 6 4 and he is the fastest swimmer in the world. and look at erik vendt he is 6 7 and is an amazing distant swimmer. so if ur friend wants to swim go for it

my mom learned how to swim at the age of 32 i would recomend to go find a swim instructer dont be scared, that just makes it harder maybe get a good looking instructer as a motivation you will do fine !

You can learn at any age and height has nothing to do do with ability to learn. I'm 6ft 6 and learnt to swim in my twenties. It's NOT a hopeless case at all!

if he's willing to try then im sure he can learn to swim. if he's afraid that it might be embarrassing he can sign up for a private lesson.

anyone can learn how to swim. maybe he may not pick it up as fast as the younger kids but he can definetly learn how to swim
