How to start swimming strokes? joined high school swim team?
-
hello! I recently joined the high school swim team, and we just had our first meet a few days ago. Because it was my first meet ever, i didn't swim. However, i thought it was a good thing i didn't swim because i realized i didn't know anything at all! As i was observing, i realized that there are ways of starting every stroke, there are people timing, entry cards, jv and varsity teams, and so much more! So, today, my questions for you all are how do you start every stroke (free, breast, back, and fly. start explaining from diving from the block), the difference between IM and medley relay strokes, number of events in meets, what trials will look like, and last but not least rules. Thank you! additionally, i know how to swim : )

Sorry but if you really don't know I don't even really know where to start. First of all for butterfly and freestyle as you come off the block do 6-8 dolphin kicks (you should end up at around the 3rd or 4th line). In backstroke you don't dive you start by taking a 3-point entry into the water from there you grab the bars on the diving block and you hunch over with your feet relatively high up on the wall. When you hear the signal to start you spring backwards sort of bending back and you do 6-8 dolphin kicks before starting to swim. In breaststroke as you come into the water you pull down putting your hands at your sides from streamline position with a dolphin kick (1) as well. Then you do a stroke (kick and hands) under the water (watch your teammates do it) before starting your stroke. Even I get confused with the difference between medley and IM, IM is butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and free while a medley is backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. Just ask your coach or one of your teammates how many events there are (I don't know and I don't really think knowing it is that necessary). As for rules, with butterfly keep your feet together at all times and don't let your arms drag in the water. Also, don't forget your two hand touch. With backstroke keep on your back at all times don't really look around and for your turns have a count between the flags and the wall and for your last stoke turn over onto your stomach and take a freestyle stroke before you turn. Don't do this on your finishing lap (this tip might sound stupid but I've seen it happen before). With breaststroke just watch your kick and remember your two hand touch. With freestyle its pretty straightforward unless you do an open turn. Wait that reminds me with Butterfly and Breaststroke you do whats called an open turn which means you touch the wall with both hands and bring yourself into the wall and then push off (don't stop to breath). With backstroke and freestyle you do whats called a flip which means you flip yourself over and push off from the wall (you should be facing up after your turn). Also make sure to right yourself as you come of the turn depending on what stroke your doing.

Free: Off the blocks steamline.. then 3 dolphin kicks, fast flutter kick to the surface then take 3 fast strokes without breathing. Breast: DO a pull out. Eyes down. Back: Same as freestyle. Fly: Dolphin kick fairly far to save energy. When you start losing speed off your wall take 2 strokes without breathing. IM: Order; Fly back breast free. (2 hand touch for fly and breast. Touch on your back after you finish backstroke then push off for breast.) Medley Relay: Order; Back breast fly free.
STARTS free style u start on the blocks. There are too positions track start and putting both feet at the blocks. make sure ur toes are over the blocks. when the go whistle or beep sounds through ur hands at a 45 degree angle. when u hit the water do dolphin kicks and when ur almost to the surface stroke so u reach the top right when u stroke and use the arm that is closes to the bottom when stream lining. Backstroke. u also start on the blocks but instead u are in the water. u can hold the bars under the blocks or just hold the wall. when the beep goes off or whistle throw ur hands back and do dolphin kicks. like free when ur almost to the surface of the water stroke Breast take ur mark like free but instead of doing dolphin kicks do a pull down fly take ur marks like free and breast and do dolphin kicks IM IM stands for individual medley. So u swim all the strokes in one event which in order is fly back breast free Medley relay is a team race so one person will swim one stroke. the order is back breast fly free Im srry i cant answer the number of events or what trails look like cause i didnt start yet RULES well u cant pass 15 yards under water back stay on ur back breast two hand touch same as fly thats all i can think of right now GL
