Rugby or Soccer Cleats/boots for a speed player?
-
I am going to play rugby this fall for the school team and I'm not sure if I should get rugby or soccer cleats. I used to play soccer a fair amount and I have become quite comfortable with the smaller studs and lighter feel. I picked up a pair of rugby boots and I was surprised at the stud size. I was wondering if the large studs would be a problem on hard surfaces. Soccer cleats seem to be lighter and more agile. And I tend to like playing on the wing, so I'm not sure if I should use soccer or rugby boots. I currently have these rugby boots. http://is.gumtree.com/ad_image/live/big/266818663.jpg Any suggestions? Are the metal studs good on hard surfaces? Are soccer boots faster?

I would strongly suggest having more than one pair of boots. If you're playing in the backs, and i suspect that you are being that you refer to yourself as a speed player, the blade style boots are fantastic. They allow for great acceleration and sharp turning in dry weather. Now, if you play somewhere where you may get a fair bit of rain, get some good wet weather boots too. Cheap ones, you probably won't wear them unless you're playing in a downpour. Slazenger or Adidas make real good steel stud backs boots and you can usually pick some up for about $30. Even hang onto those Mizunos you've got, they're decent for wearing less often. (I've got a pair of those and you just can't kill them, mine are about five seasons old but I also have a pair of Adidas Flankers and a pair of Canterbury Kahas - prop boots) You'll probably wear the blades most as they're good on hard ground, on turf and in the damp but they are completely useless in heavy rain and mud and you'll be glad you have the Mizunos.

This season only football boots or rugby boots a both ok and you dont need a specific stud but if you are playing in the front 5 i strongly suggest u stick with rugby boots otherwise for a speed player where you are not quite involded in the game football boots would be a good idea, I am wearing blades at the moment and playing even 7 8 or 9 and they a perfect .
It depends on a couple of things. firstly how big are you? soccer boots are designed to support soccer players probably averaging 80kg odd and rugby players are often 100kg or more. if you fall into the first category where whatever you want. another thing is often rugby pitches are not as fine as soccer pitches and then you might need a longer stud, and obviously the weather also should factor in your decision. but i think if you like a smaller rugby player (like 90kg or less) and you prefer your soccer boots go for it.

Metal studs aren't good for very hard ground. It might make your ankles sore. There are rugby boots made for speed, and those boots usually have blades. The best one's I know are the Adidas Predator Powerswerve Rugby TRX, the Adidas Flanker Nine 15 III's. These are specially made for backs. The Powerswerves have blades, not studs, so it allows greater agility. They're the best boots a back can get at the moment. Another good boot for speed is the Asics Lethal Tigreor II. A majority of NRL players wear these. You can also get soccer cleats for rugby since you're a winger. I wouldn't recommend soccer cleats for forwards. If you want your boots to have a good look as well as speed and traction, the best are the Nike Mercurial Vapours series. Again, a lot of NRL players wear the Mercurials. Even ex-Wallaby Lote Tuqiri wears Mercurials and he's a wing. Another pair of soccer cleats you can get are the Nike Total 90's. I've seen plenty of union backs in the French Top 14 wear these, including Sonny Bill Williams. So here's a list of what are the best in the order of my personal preference: - Adidas Predator Powerswerve Rugby TRX - Asics Lethal Tigreor II - Nike Mercurial Vapours - Nike Total 90 Laser - Adidas Nine 15 III Also in addition, large studs are alright on hard surfaces, provided that they are built for hard ground. Sometimes you notice 'SG' (soft ground) or 'FG' (firm ground) in the model. If you can afford it, get two pairs: a pair of SG's and FG's. Lovell Rugby (www.lovell-rugby.co.uk) is the best online rugby store I know. Prices are VERY cheap and shipping is just as cheap too.
