Hi im 14 Resently been asked to go to county trials for my local rugby county. I am captain for my local club i have been playing rugby for only 3 years now but i beleive i have excelled. The problem i have is that i am quite skinny. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to build up a bit of muscle? Should i be using weights? or stick to press ups and such? I am quite nervous about the trials it and was wondering if anyone out there could give me any tips at all on Rugby? I would really appreciate it! All the best

Depending on your usual position, size really isn't too too important! I played Fullback all my life, and was never heavier than 11 and a half stone! There were a few things going for me, my hands, I had excellent hands. My testicular fortitude, in other words I had balls, guts, I new I was about to get pole axed, but would still make the pass, catch etc. Finally, hand on heart, I can honestly say I never missed a tackle, if I was close enough to make the tackle, the opponent was tackled. I remember one particular tackle that put me in hospital, the guy was 22 stone, 3 minutes to go, we were up by a couple of points, inside our own 22. Their no. 8 came around the blind side which I was expecting, our winger went through the motions of a tackle to make it look good. I was hanging around on that side as I kinda knew what was coming. I got in front of the no.8 and brought him down, I remember his smile when he looked up and saw little old me in front of him. I brought him down and saved the try.....I had double vision for 3 days, but I made that tackle. I spoke to the guy in the clubhouse after the game after he approached me. He congratulated me, adding he had necer been brought down by such a small guy. At the end of the day adding muscle through natural sources, ie. exercise and working out in the gym WILL help your game, but I would contact a personal trainer to help you work out a diet and exercise programme to help you with this. Tackling is in my opinion the most important part of the game. Take them low and hard, and as hard as it is...keep your eyes open!!! Good luck!

I agree with Madmac, at you're age it's too young to be considering weights. Concentrate on your skills, technique and fitness more than anything else. As you get older the muscle will come and your body will be ready for the weights, and as you've concentrated on the basic skills at a young age, it will stand to you.

Last thing I would want to do would be to sound at all patronising as I was in your exact position myself when I was 14. The thing is that building up bulk at such a pivotal age is a very dangerous thing to do in regards to your development and growth. I know guys who did a lot of weights and took supplements at 14 and they stunted their growth. Being fit is brilliant, do lots of running and some sit-ups and press-ups but stay away from weights for a couple of years. Your county coach and selectors will be experienced in coaching your age group, as a result they can spot potential and realise that in time you'll fill out. They're much more interested in your ability and skill. After all every age group team has some big bruiser with little actual ability, by the time your 16 they'll be nothing special and as such a coach won't be interested in them. My advice is to make sure A) You're fit and and have high enough stamina to impress B) You have all the necessary skills for your position perfected Good luck with the trials but remember it's not the end of the world if you don't get in so go relaxed and show them your game.
