Who is Geelongs captain now?

Who thinks the Captain AND vice Captain should talk to the ref.?

  • I think the captain and vice-captain only, should be allowed to talk to the Ref's.How can one person (captain) know what's going on around him if 3-4 ref's don't know.Yes the vice-captain has a say but only when the Captain is off the field. In other words NOT only does the Captain have to watch every-body in his team, but also the opposition as well as the Ref's." WHAT DO YOU THINK"

  • Answer:

The function of the Captain speaking with the referee is to maintain the flow of the game and emphasize the responsibility (as well as the authority) of the referee with respect to the rules of the game. It is not to whinge to the ref about his calls, and certainly not to influence him. Vice captains and everyone else can speak to the Captain, so there is no reason for the Captain to be any more unclear than anyone else. My experience is that the referee and his assistants are doing the best they can, just like all the players on the field [who, typically, make plenty of mistakes per game themselves]. So, short of safety concerns, I reckon everybody ought to focus on his own business and try to win the game. Whinging about the referee is the last refuge of losers. Mark L.

Although the captain has the "right" to address issues to the ref He/she should refrain unless there is a safety concern. No one is gonna (or as least shouldn't be able to with a good ref) change the ref's mind or get him to call something different or something he missed after the fact. Play solid rugby and score tries. If you're scoring and retaining ball and not committing a lot of penalties IT SHOULD NOT MATTER HOW BAD/BIASED THE REF IS OR HOW MUCH YOUR OPPONENTS ARE CHEATING/GETTING CHIPPY. TRAIN AND PLAY TO WIN EVERY GAME REGARDLESS OF A CRAPPY REF OR CHIPPY OPPOSITION IS. Let the ref call the game and play hard and win whatever the circumstances are.

No. Look at the chaos that occurs in soccer. The captain, co captain, the team, and the fans go after the ref. It's an ugly and unsportsmanlike like-occurance. Only the rugby captain should talk to the ref. A captain should have the ability and leadership quality to relay from his teammates to the referee.

You asked this already in the rugby league section. Answer is no different. No, I think it will stay with the captain only being able to talk to the ref. At present two people can talk to the ref, doubling it to four will drive the ref batty. I have two sons who referee and they sometimes feel one player a side is too much.
