What's a good 40 yard dash time for a wing in rugby union?
-
I just started playing for my college and they've been trying me out at wing. I'm 5'8" and 140 lb, so I'm tryin to bulk up a little bit there. We ran the 40 at practice today and I ran a 4.47, and I was wondering if that was fast, mediocre, or slow for a wing. Thanks!

Answer:
well in the countries where rugby is played it is mainly done by 100m times rather than 40 yard dash. also unlike the nfl there are not events like the combine and draft where every aspect of a player is analyzed and teams see if the player is worth a pick, instead most teams scout out schools for players around the ages of 13 and 14 and take them into their acadamies, from here they have a direct influence on the players progression and if he continues to impress through the years he will get a contract, normally between the ages of 17 and 20. also pure speed is not as much of an asset in rugby as it is in the nfl as in rugby you need to be a more all round player, so speed is not documented as much. there are a few 100m times in circulation however, Brian Habana and Rupeni Caucau who are known as being two of the faster if not faster players in world rugby have clocked 100m times around the 10.2 or 10.3 mark but i dont know how that converts to 40 yards sorry. i think that 4.47 would probably be a good time for a winger at uni standard rugby (dont know how good college is so am comparing it to university in england), you wont be the fastest guy on the pitch but by no means the slowest. One thing you deffinetatly need to do however is bulk up, at 140 lb you are going to be going backwards in ever tackle and when you need to ruck you will be driven right off of the ball

they don't train in rugby union over 40 yards. They train over 50metres because when they asked Bryan Habana what he does the 100 in he said he didn't know as they train over 50metres. It makes sense though, cause if you give Bryan Habana 100metres obviously he's gone, so they work on acceleration and getting your top speed up...

might wanna check ur clock on that one lol but anywhere in the 4s would be pretty good for college, typically you would do a 100m sprint though... hope this helps
I highly doubt you ran that fast 100m olympic sprinters run that fast rofl
