What is brazil's national anthem?

Is the English national anthem the same as the British national anthem?

  • Just saw the opening of the Wales v England rugby match and first there was the Welsh national anthem and then the English national anthem but they English national anthem is God Save The Queen - the same as the British national anthem? So, while Welsh folks sing the Welsh anthem and English folks sing the English anthem - don't the Welsh also sing the English national anthem?!!!

  • Answer:

I agree, England should get their own anthem.....'Land of Hope and Glory' or something. It doesn't bother us either way though, Wales will always sing "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau." Wales are only 'part of that union' by force....we don't want to be.

The truth is.........England do not have their own national Anthem, whereas Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland do, the GB anthem is God Save The Queen, which England also adopts as theirs...........why I do not know, maybe to claim that the English like to think they rule GB maybe! Who knows.........but it does point out they do not have an individual Identity via anthems like their neighbouring nations! NO, I doubt any Welsh person would sing it unless they are on a podium representing GB in the Olympics.........and even then I doubt it TBH!

Why the hell would we sing that shower of sh*t? Let's get this straight, Wales has one anthem. Every Welshman has one anthem! That anthem is Hen Wlad fy Nhadau!!! Up until the early 70s God Save The Queen was the Welsh anthem at matches, but they had to change it because of the ferocious reaction of Welsh fans when it was sung. None of the players sang it and the Welsh fans booed it every time. The notion of a British anthem is nonsense. I don't know one Welshman or Scotsman who knows the words to the English anthem. Unlike the English we don't believe we should celebrate our nations by begging God to save a useless, upper-class, over-paid English grandmother!

God Save the Queen is not sung in Wales... Cymru am byth !

God Save the Queen includes a verse about crushing rebellious Scots, so it isn't too popular up here.

I've never sang the English/British national anthem, don't even know the words :s

Welshy!

It's not that it's the same anthem, it's that England have never used any other one. Unlike Scotland and Wales, who have used their own songs for years. I personally don't care that they use the British anthem; I don't feel it means anything very much to anyone Scottish or Welsh anyway. But it would be good if, as many England rugby fans would clearly like, Jerusalem was adopted by English rugby union authorities if only to give them access to a much better song which is patriotic to England alone as Flower of Scotland is to Scotland and the Welsh one (sorry, can't remember what it's called off the top of my head; and it's in Welsh which I don't speak so I don't see the need to upset any Welshmen by mincing their lanuage) is to Wales.

a lot of English rugby fans tried to get their rugby anthem changed to Jerusalem in the 90s but nothing came from it. I think Jerusalem or land of hope and glory are far better tunes but rugby is a very traditional sport so it's not easy to get your anthem changed.
