What kind of cleats/boots should i wear for a tight/loose head rugby player?
-
I just got started and the coach wants me to play Tight/loose head or hooker... What kind of cleats/boots should i get? I want light shoes that I can still be agile in but support for the punishment that my ankles are going to get in the scrum... What are your guys ideas?

Answer:
Get a pair of low-cut Adidas Flankers and wrap your ankle with Wondertape. This way you can have both agility and ankle support.

My advice would be to get boots that provide a lot of grip, for example Canterbury boots that are designed for front row forwards. They have long metal studs and are ideal for getting grip for scrums and rucking, which is what you will be doing primarily. If you still want movement try the Canterbury Wero Elite, I had them and they were really good. If you can avoid it don't get molded studs as you will just slip when scrimmaging.

I've been playing rugby for ten years at Tighthead and for most of that time have been wearing ankle boots from Gilbert, they usually have reinforced toes to stop stamping, the high sided shield your ankles and the long studs give great grip!
Hi, i have got Kooga boots, they are light, have side supports and a metatarsal prtotection strip built inside the tongue of the boot, very important in them front rows and rucks where everyone is stamping about for the ball lol i also put white sports socks on first with either tape or ankle supports under the actual team socks for that extra pressure that scrummaging puts on your ankles, after 20 years as #1, my ankles crack like mad so protect them .... hope this helps .

Your ankles wont get any punishment in the scrum if you do the proper leg and ankle strengthening exercises. Get a flat board and attach a half round ball underneath. Use it to stand on and roll your ankles to strengthen. As a front row forward you need to make sure you have the right length of sprigs on your boots so as to eliminate as much slippage as possible.

I'm a Front Rower and a Back Rower and i wear Adidas Flankers, They fit really well and are quite protective of your whole foot. also they give you a lot of freedom to move too.
If you're pretty new at it, soccer cleats are a great cheaper option. I've never had a problem wearing them in the pack.
