Is rugby league played in Scotland and Ireland?

  • Obviously rubgy league is popular in (the north of) England, and there is a Welsh team in the Super League, Crusaders. But I've never heard much about rugby leaue in Scotland or Ireland. Is it played there?

    I suppose it depends on what you mean by "played". You can no doubt find the odd group of League enthusiasts who have managed to throw together a club of sorts in Scotland and Ireland. So it is played. But for all practical purposes the answer is no. League is virtually unknown in those two countries; there is no significant professional or development structure, and they only manage to put together international sides by recruiting expatriate Australians and Englishmen who only qualify for those nations under the grandparent rule. By the way, your observation that Wales has a professional League side needs qualification. At the end of the current SuperLeague season Wales no longer has a SuperLeague club. Crusaders have announced that they will not be renewing their SuperLeague license next season and the future for the club itself looks very bleak. Given that, how can any sport which only manages to field all of 17 clubs across the whole of Ireland be described as anything other than moribund? And Scotland has a national structure? Last I checked, the "Scottish Rugby League" was an afterthought affiliate of the English organization. Either you or I have got to rethink some definitions.

You will probably get more direct answers if you post your question in the rugby league section of y/a rather than the rugby union section. But off the top of my head, I would say rugby league is played on a small scale in both Scotland and Ireland both these countries do have a national soccer and rugby union side but not a league side other than at world cup time where players with Scottish or Irish heritage are thrown together to make up the numbers.

Yes is the answer, both countries have recognised governing bodies who operate the national squads and development teams. Compared to the North of England rugby league in Ireland and Scotland is a minority sport but it is growing in both countries. In Scotland for example there is a full player pathway from Under 15 up to professional level, they have a two tier adult domestic competition with teams from Ayrshire to Moray in the North of Scotland. Scotland Rugby League also operate a National Youth League for Under 15 and Under 17 and operate a schools competition at the same age groups. Rugby League Ireland have 17 domestic clubs across the country and development staff in place. The Scotland national squad is generally made up of heritage players from Super League and the Championship clubs and play annually in the European Cup or Autumn internationals however they do have a strong amateur quota for the pro squad which ensures there are domestic players in the full squad. This year Scotland are playing Ireland at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow and France in Perpignan. If you are looking for more information best bet is to check out the websites below.
