Tips for a first time rugby player?
-
I'm 15 years old and i'll be 16 in a month and I'm going to turn up to rugby training for my school and maybe an outside team later in the year. I have little experience with rugby most of which is mucking about with my Friends but I have a really strong pass, with both hands (but a better right hand pass) and I can kick it, albeit not very well. I'm fairly agile but not very fast in a strait line and I have fairly poor fitness, but I am working on improving that with some friends. My tackling could be improved on but I reckon I have an idea behind the technique (Shoulder into the midpoint and arms around the legs then drive up with the legs) but I'll need to try and do it in practice. So tips on this would be appreciated as well as other things. Position wise my rugby friends reckon I would fit well as either a scrum half (because of my throwing and agility) or a fly half because of my physique (I am 6ft and I weigh 10.2 stones). Any tips on playing these positions (especially scrum half) would be appreciated as well. I have tennis lessons every week and also go swimming and have fitness sessions every week. I try to put a lot of protein, calcium and carbs in my diet but I don't focus on it very much. I sometimes do exercises in my room such as press-ups, tricep dips and bicep curls with dumbells but they are very sporadic and I have little structure to them. Help with bulking up would be nice but I don't want to go out of my way and focus on it entirely. So yeah... help on anything would be fantastic because I really like the idea of Rugby and I don't want to regret not taking it up when I'm older, better to try it and hate it than never try it. Thanks ;) tl;dr I'm 15 years old, 6ft tall and weigh 10.2 stone. Help on: General Rugby skills (tackling, kicking etc) Playing scrum half Help bulking up without a lot of disruption Anything Rugby related :) Thanks

Answer:
I'm great at tackling but not great at kicking. When you tackle get your shoulder into the top of the thigh, squeeze their knees together because this constricts their balance and will definitely get them down. When you have got them to the ground to get right up and get the ball, your team mates should follow you and should get the ball, just stay on the ground, this way you will not get injured. Even though i am not great at kicking the ball i know how to get power into the ball and how to get it up. When you kick the ball make your toes as close to the ground as possible, make sure the top of your foot going onto the laces makes contact first, follow through with it, don't stop your leg from moving. doing what i have just said should give you lift in the ball and enough power.

General Rugby skills - Always make sure to be in position, never offside. Never be at a place where you can not contribute to the team. Tackling is easy, just aim for the centre mass and if they don't go down just hold and pull by the legs. Aside from that never be afraid of making a tackle or running in a big bloke. Playing scrum half - Never played the position, but it's important to have a good pass make sure to put spin on it. Takes a lot of vision to know who to pass to, probably not the best position for a beginner. Again fly half is a difficult and important position, you need to be able to kick very well and be a natural leader. My advice for you size and age is either go for flanker, or if you're not into the physical forward game try centre. Bulking up - Eat plenty of meat and eggs, forget all that protein shake crap. Lots of pull ups, sit-ups and press-ups just the simple things, you don't need a gym subscription to get a nice physique.
