Which is better sport, Rugby or A. Football?
-
Here's the thing. I played both football and rugby, both about 2 years, so I ask you, which one do you consider better? I personally prefer rugby. I live in Croatia, where both sports are played at amateur level, so I didn't experience those sports in pro level. The thing is, I started with AF first (because (well, it's funny), here, when you say ''rugby'', everything that has anything to do with egg shapped ball is called rugby, no matter if it's AF, aussie, gridiron or it really is rugby), and played it for 2 years as linemen (I'm not really fat, but moderately strong) both in offence and defence (we didn't have enough players for proper offence and defence). I can say that I enjoyed playing it, but somethimes it was really boring, 'cuz every action and attack was pretty much same and all I was supposed to do is prevent player in front of me reaching the quarterback. Every time. Every game. Even watching football on TV was boring. Well, it had some really impressive plays and actions, but looking on a whole stuff, it was boring. In other hand, rugby gave me opportunity to get the ball and score a try. I started playing it just for fun and I was still playing AF at the time, and after a while, I realised how different are those games. First, I had to RUN. That's right. I had strenght which i got from AF, but i lacked both speed and indurance. Second, i lacked TEHNIQUE. At the beginning, I couldn't beat any 1 on 1 plays because only thing i knew was to smash into other player, while others commonly stepped and runned past me. And I had to learn tehniques in almost everything i did. TACKLING- the most important. In AF, the thing isn't really tackling, it's more like bashing into opponent and hoping he'll fall down. Try doing that in rugby where the player can just as easy step up and keep on running. And yeah, you don't have helmet and pads, so you can't bash into someone with head. If you try that, it's likely that you'll end up in a hospital with a spine injury. PASSING THE BALL- Yeah, in rugby, every player can carry, pass and kick the ball so I had to learn both passing, throwing line-out and kicking ball. SCRUM, MAUL, RUCK- Formations and occasions that was really hard to understand. When, why, how? Not to mention that most injuryes happens in those. Basically, rugby is mostly running, tackling, passing and beating each other for 80 minutes while in AF I'm only pushing the guy in front of me backwards and sometimes running 3-4 metters for another one. And finally, I consider rugby as more complex (because all the tehnique you must learn, not to mention numerus tactical options in line-outs, scrums, mauls, tactics that conbine forwards and backs etc), more phisically requesting, more entertaining and faster sport than AF. Yes, you've got to be quick and strong in AF and I know that you've got lots of tactics, but in rugby you must have speed, strenght, endurance and must be concentrated on a game whole time. About the tackling and roughness, they are almost equal, except that I made about 3-4 proper tackles in whole AF game and above 30 in whole rugby game. So, decide: Rugby or American Football?

Answer:
No offence to you mate, but why are you asking these people? Hardly any of them have played both, you are in a much better position to weigh both. it's totally down to preference, I grew up with rugby and I love it, I also play AF, and also love it. You don't have to pick one over the other, and those who denigrate the other game make a bigger statement about themselves and their insecurities than anything else.

The better sport is the one you like the most. I'm an American, but I prefer rugby. Your English is really good, by the way.

If you don't want to get hurt, play football as it is basically rugby for wimps. Rugby is better if you are a man.

Rugby! I think it's mainly because I like the continuous play better, and I like playing without all the protective gear.
