The last game at Yankee Stadium might not be baseball!?
-
The NHL and the Yankees are continuing their work toward a deal that would call for the Rangers to play host to a 2008-09 regular-season game before Yankee Stadium is shuttered for good, the New York Daily News reported in Monday's editions. Whoa! http://nationalpost.pa-sportsticker.com/... How are you feeling about this? I like hockey but Yankee Stadium's last game should be left to the Bronx Bombers!

Answer:
It would be wrong to have the last game in Yankee Stadium not a baseball game. I think Montreal should get the outdoor game next year because it is their 100 year anniversary. It should be against the Leafs. I know the NHL is aiming toward USA and blah blah blah but that doesn't mean they should just ignore Canada and not give us an outdoor game.

As a big Rangers and Yanks fan, I don't know how I feel about this. I would LOVE to see a Rangers game at Yankee Stadium. I would especially love it to be a Rangers/Isles game. I can just imagine 57,000 loud, obnoxious new yorkers screaming for my team. :). And despite what someone else said, Buffalo and NYC are, for all intents and purposes, in different states. Buffalo is 8ish hours from NYC driving, and it has a completely different feel. I lived in WNY for 5 years, (though in Rochester, not Buffalo), and live in NYC now. They're not close, and I know plenty of people from Buffalo that have never been to nyc. Pros: Biggest media market. My team. :). History of Yankee Stadium. Rangers have been playing well the past few seasons, might get NYC interested in hockey again (which has been slowly happening recently) (which is a big deal... why do you think hockey was so popular in 1994?) Cons: unpredictable NYC weather might mean a 60 degree day, which could lead to bad ice and shitty game conditions, and of course, Yankee Stadium is sacred and shouldn't the last game played be baseball? Though, as someone said, many stadiums do not have baseball being the last event there. I don't think hosting a hockey game would ruin anyone's memory of Yankee Stadium, nor would it affect the legacy of the stadium. I think Steinbrenner did a lot more harm to Yankee Stadium by building a new one than hosting a hockey game would.
Go Rangers!
I'm really excited about this!
I would LOVE to see the Rangers play at Yankee Stadium, especially if the Islanders were the visitors. I'd go to that one. Yankee Stadium was built for many uses, and all kinds of events have been held on that field. Many of the building's most memorable events were not baseball games. This would be one last big hurrah for the building, and would be one of the most memorable sporting events of all time, especially here in New York. Yes, I really did say that, and you read it correctly. This is also the IDEAL time to do a game like this; they wouldn't have to worry about preserving the pristine field anymore. So, no worries about any damage done by the rink to the field underneath. The Yankees themselves seem to be fine with it. I say go for it, and so do the Yankees! EDIT: By the way, the last event at Shea might not be a Mets game. That place might be packed for Billy Joel well after the last pitch. I know Shea isn't exactly Yankee Stadium, but for many Mets fans, the phrase "it may be an old barn, but it's OUR old barn" holds very true. Furthermore, the Dodgers weren't the last to play at Ebbets field. Many games were played there after the Dodgers were done. There was at least one NYC high-school championship baseball game, in 1958. There were even a few SOCCER games, with BOTH teams being European teams! At least with Islanders-Rangers, it would be a HUGE party with a decidedly NEW YORK flavor! EDIT: Greg W, well guess you gave you your thumbs-up? Haha...and I did that even before your edit.
NYC fan
An outdoor game in NY would be great to see and God knows I hate the Yankees, but I have to agree that the last game in Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game.

I heard they may do the same for Wrigley Field for the Chicago Blackhawks how about that.

I hate those outdoor NHL games. The bad ice makes the players tentative which in turn makes the games boring to watch.
Da Pho?
I just think its funny that on here it was joked about how long ago... makes u wonder who lity really is. NHL gets ideas from Y/A now haha

I totally agree with you, let the team thats played there for eons be the last to use it.
Freckles:Time For Your Check Up
My first problem is having a second straight outdoor game in New York. Buffalo just had one this year, let's let other parts of the country experience this. Maybe Chicago, it's cold enough there. As for Yankee Stadium. I agree, the Yankees should be the last game there. They should play the Red Sox. And they should take an early 3-0 lead and lose 4-3.
