What is boodle fight?

What would two hockey players say to each other when they agree to fight?

  • So, if a hockey player (OHL or NHL) wants to fight someone - how would he say so? Wikipedia: " The most important aspect of this etiquette is that opposing enforcers must agree to a fight, usually via a verbal or physical exchange on the ice." Would he just insult him? Ask to fight ("Do you want to fight")? Insult his team/family? Remind him of a previous fight? Challenge him ("I can pwn you n00b")? Is there a phrase for it? Sorry - I don't know much about hockey :(

  • Answer:

Depends on the situation and where the fight is taking place on the ice. If it happens off a face off it is lamost always done with the simple question "Want to do this", "Want to go" type questions and once they agree both guys give eachother the room to prepare and they engage. If it is done in the middle of a play it is usually done with some provocation with a stick jab and a nasty challenge. Amazingly on occasion guys will agree even before a game (in the pre game skate or in passing at the rink) to do some business on the ice....this is usually resulting from an earlier game where something happened and it is agreed they will settle whatever team or personal differences they may have on the first convenient shift. And sometimes a guy will know that something will happen like when Booth returned Richards knew they would have to settle up for the hit once they were out there together so they get it over with. Very rarely will guys get real personal...most are friends off the ice and have enough respect to keep it from being personal. They may chirp and call eachother names or get in their grill with some usually funny insult or a dirty word now and then but 95% of all fights are done with respect to proper protocol. And they simply ask if the other guy is ready!

"So what'd you have for lunch today?" "Oh, you know...the usual chicken Parmesan." "Right on, do you recommend it?" "Oh, definitely. It's just across the street on the north side of the arena." "Cool, thanks. By the way, do you mind if we tangle? I really need to spark my team." "Of course. Good luck." "Thanks, you too."

Usually something as simple as "Let's go" does it, but sometimes it can be a little more involved. Among known fighters and enforcers, though, the conversation about it is short and to the point without insult.

I suspect it it involves the other player's mother and/or wife and words that will get censored from Yahoo Answers.

I've read places that David Clarkson tries to get under his opponent's skin and will say anything he can to get someone to want to fight him.

"I'm gonna take off my skate"

no theres no specific phrase used, it's essentially just "you gonna fight me pussy" or "lets go buddy"
