Any tips for skating on ice for hockey?

Hockey tips for beginner skater?

  • I started to skate last October for the first time, and I'm pretty terrible. The school I go to only allows the boarders (the people who live at the school) to skate once a week, so I haven't been able to get a lot of practice. My parents live in Saudi Arabia, so during the summer I never have a chance to practice. I've been a hockey fan as long as I can remember though, and it's always been a dream of mine to play for a team (I'm in my junior year of high school). I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips (still learning how to stop, turning around without losing momentum lol) for skating, and any ideas of a way to improve without an ice surface. My gym teacher told me that to practice stick handling and shooting I could use a hardwood surface like a basketball court if I can't get onto the ice, but I haven't been able to do that yet (I play basketball, soccer and rugby and I've been training pretty extensively). I want to start training as much as possible though, and I'm dedicated. I know it's a long shot, but if I made the team next year, it would be one of the best days of my life. Any tips in general for a very basic skater would be helpful and appreciated.

Sounds like you have a lot to learn. But just remember, you didn't get good at the other sports you play overnight, it took training + dedication. Your gym teacher has a good idea however balance is different in shoes than in skates. Can you get some rollerblades? It's slightly different than on ice skates, but some off-ice practise is better than none. Look for videos on youtube.
