Where is the nearest ice rink to Brighton?

What is the best way to fill my backyard ice rink?

  • I have built a 15x30 ice rink in my backyard. The rink is built on a slope of about 7 inches at the low end, so I need about 9 inches of ice at the low end so that I have 2 at the high end. The weather has not been very cooperative this year, as nights have been just at freezing with high 30s during the day. Last night I filled about 2 inches of water in the low end and as of today had a half inch thick layer of ice. My question is what is the best approcah to fill this? Should I do it in layers or fill the whole thing and let the top few inches freeze? Even if I do get a couple inches of ice in thickness and are a few inches of water underneath at the low end will that work? I am afraid that even if I get thick ice the water underneath that has not frozen will damage the ice. I don't think the whole low end will ever freeze since it would be so deep? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Honestly you should have built up the slope which will make your process easier because you need temperatures below 0C to get 9" of water to freeze (if you have it leveled off it's much easier). Until things get real cold you're going to have a problem.

you should go by layers, as going with a big chunk, will make the ice of a worse quality, and you will have big chances of having big cracks.... so yes, little by little...

Probably little by little, I know how you feel it's end of December and it was 50 today..
