What are some good ice hockey skates?

Would ice hockey skates be difficult for someone good with figure skates?

  • I wouldn't say I am phenomenal at figure skating (I can't do tricks or anything) but I am very comfortable on the ice. I took lessons as a kid and I can skate better than the usual crowd at a public skating session. I can skate backwards (slowly, though) and spin, etc. Do you think hockey skates would be difficult for me, or do you think I won't have trouble getting used to them quickly?

  • Answer:

Hockey skates have a whole different shaped boot and a curved blade. The shape of the blade mean you can't stand up too straight or lean back or you'll fall over. I wouldn't just switch and expect to be perfect, a switch in skates is awkward, but so long as you don't use the picks to propel yourself forward, I think you'd be ok. Not Wayne Gretzky, but ok.

Well it depends if you're comfortable turning your feet and braking on the sides. As long as you get that part going, there shouldn't be any major difference between figure and hockey skates. Also if you are comfortable skating using the V pattern. You should definitely excel at it.

A lot of figure skaters have a very hard time even standing on hockey skates. Its because the hockey skates' blades are curved and they have a double edge. It depends on the person though. I'd reccomend trying them out before buying.
