Why cant soccer players take off their shirts after scoring goals?

Will higher scoring games increase NHL popularity. how do you achieve that?

  • General opinion is that the NHL isn’t as exciting as the Gretzky era was in the 80s. Altho there may be more fans, the percentage of fan base compared to other sports may have decreased. Pretty much everyone agrees that higher scoring sports translate into more exciting contests and more watched games. (more lead changes). That’s why Americans don’t like soccer and don’t like 1-0 baseball games or 6-3 football games. So my question is…how does the NHL make higher scoring games? After all, making the goals bigger will only allow for goalies to let more in, but you’ll still have the “clutching and grabbing” complaint. Wouldn’t it be better to allow for a more open game? Some may disagree, but if you generally agree w/ me, can you give your thoughts on why the NHL doesn’t simply take action on this rather than just talk about it. Make the rules, and then make the enforce-able, and then make the refs enforce the rules so that great players can be even greater...crosby, selanne, kariya

  • Answer:

Hockey shouldn't change. People still love it no matter what, and if they conform to what non-fans want than that will only make the true fans madder than they already were about the Lockout. Enlarging the nets would ruin the game. If the nets were larger than any scoring record that is broken would never be acknowledged as nearly as great of a feat. Example: If Crosby scores 93 with enlarged nets it would never be as good as when Gretzky scored 92 goals with smaller nets. Then people would look at this great feat by Crosby as a lesser thing because with the larger net, Gretzky would have scored over 100. Hockey should never make any huge changes. I love watching a battle of goalies more than a battle of scorers anyway.

Well obvioulsy with the up and coming stars like ovechkin and crosby your gunna start to see more goals because of the talent an dthe fast pace style. But to achieve the goal of getting higher scoring games isnt easy. they've tried this year with the new restrictions on gaolie pads and net sizes being increased but they can only go to so many extremes. They NHL has to pace itself in changing the game. Besides the goalies are National Hockey League players too. Theyve earned their stripes and belong in this league and thir job is to limit scoring. Believe me, they dont want things to keep changing so their job is harder.

Hockey is fine the way it is, they already made changes to the rules after the lockout. If people dont get that hockey is a great sport and fun to watch then fcuk them. They can go watch their nascar and beat their wives. Hockey is the fastest and best sport on earth, if you cant see that then a few more goals isnt gonna do anything. Leave the game alone. It doesnt have to be changed, the fans need to change, they need to get smarter.

Well most of the time the only things that catch peoples attention in the NHL are fights, hits, and sometimes cheap shots like simon and hollweg. Occasionally they show a goal or two on sports center but not as much as basketball and baseball. Hockey is just not as popular in America than in other countries. Many people agree that hockey is only popularized when something bad happens again like the chris simon incident. I wish they would popularize the good sides to hockey like the goals and the plays. People just don't realize how much skill those guys have.

The new NHL kinda allowed for that to happen with more popwerplays, however if there are more goals, goalies like Luongo, Brodeur, Hasek, and Kipprosoff will get the short end of the stick because their production will go down and they will like junk. I like it as is, but i still see where youre coming from.

Some hockey games are higher scoring than others. There have been football games that end 12-9 (Ravens vs. Colts this year). The problem isn't in making the game of hockey more appealing by increasing the number of goals in a game. True fans will love the game for what it is. Non-hockey fans can either take it or leave it. The problem isn't with the sport, but with people in general. Everybody in America wants something yesterday, and the overall consensus is that people want something NOW, FASTER, and CHEAPER. That's why people drive the way they do, and that is why the education system in America is ****. I don't think making hockey a higher scoring game will increase it's fan base. I do think that the league needs to stop calling, every little grab and jostle of players going hard for the same disc. It's a physical sport, but this year the referees have taken more credit for controlling a game than either team. I agree that the league needs to reach a final agreement on what to call and what not to, but they can't change the rules at the end of a season. Hockey will be more appealing to more people when the rules are understood better. In order to do that, more people need to be exposed to the sport at an easy to understand level. That could happen if their were more money invested in the sport. But, big investors don't touch hockey with a ten foot pole because, heaven forbid, they won't make a tremendous profit. And we're talking about companies that make billions of dollars. Why do you think NASCAR is so popular? I think it is absolutly awful, but it satisfies the American idea of having something, fast, easy, and convenient, where little thought is required and the money from the sponsors is overwhelming.
