Who Are The Best Picks For The 2012 Nhl?

How many 2009 Draft Picks will see ice-time in the NHL this year (read on)?

  • Of them... Who will be most effective? (doesnt have to mean the most points) Of the whole draft... Who will end up having the most effective career? Of the 1st rounders... Which team will be thinking "we need a new scouting staff"? BQ- Where would you draw the line as to when a player is ready to play in the NHL? As in, when would you be willing to play a 18 or 19 year old in the NHL? BQ2- Of the high end draft picks from the 2 or 3 previous years who have not seen NHL icetime yet (or minimal icetime IE: Pietrangelo, Bogosian, Skille, etc)...... Who will surprise us all the most this season?

  • Answer:

1.-How many 2009 Draft Picks will see ice-time in the NHL this year ? I will say about 12. 2. Most effective season? I'll say Hedman. 3. Most effective career? I'll say Hedman. 4. None....BUT, I do not think that Duchene is as good as advertised...neither is Tavares for that matter but he will still pot lots of goals. BQ- Nowadays?? The LATER the BETTER. You draft a guy in the 1st round and he goes straight into the NHL as an 18 year old....then you pay him entry level $ for 3 years....then he becomes an RFA and gets decent money until he becomes an UFA.....at 25 after 7 years of service. I would rather he start when he is 20....entry level for 3 years etc etc......atleast you are getting better years of PRIME service before he could bolt. Their are exceptions of course of guys who are just TOO GOOD and keeping them back will hinder their development. BQ#2- I don't know if it would be so much surprising as it would be expected for guys like Pietroangelo to do well. (Bogosian had 19 points last year and played 18+ min per game).........MY pick...James van Riemsdyk of course.....Rookie of the Year! Who is the gay guy in the pic? jk-jk....it suits you actually

Tavares, Hedman and Duchene - everyone else goes back to Junior Tavares - yeah I said it! Defensemen usually struggle when they make the leap. Hedman is still an unknown to me. Not sure how a guy from Sweden will acclimatize to life in TB Tavares - twice! Detroit - yeah I said that too. A kid earns his way on the team - no exceptions No idea - Timmy! Nice pic NIPS - is that your Bob Seger look? I'm a huge fan. NIPS - I thought it would be an insult to compare you to a dead guy even if he was one of the greatest drummers ever. Besides I really am a big Seger fan. See I don't hate everything about Detroit.

1. John Tavares, Victor Hedman, Matt Duchene, Brayden Schenn, Nazem Kadri. 2. Victor Hedman. 3. Victor Hedman. 4. Minnesota Wild. Edit - Sorry forgot the BQ's BQ - I would play an 18 yr. old if they have proven themselves ready for NHL play. BQ2 - I'd go with Cody Hodgson.

WHo will be most effective this season. I figure that Tavares and Duschene both will get significant ice time in offensive situations and be somewhat tolorated for defensive lapses so they should both have strong offensive years. The Isles are desperate so Tavares has to get 2-22 minutes a night and the Aves have shown they will give young guys lots of ice time. Who will be the best in time.....Hedman will struggle with the smaller ice and faster pace right now but I expect him to eventually be an elite defenseman and possibly the cream of this years draft. I just dont see any of the other guys being ready (or their team as deperate) so those are the only guys I would expect to get significant ice time (dont be surprised if the Oilers bring along Svensson this year either). BQ.....I guess it depends on the kid. Many can step in immediately and make solid contributions so if he is ready (or the team is desperate) I see nothing wrong with bringing him along right away. On the worst teams sometimes that extra time to grow without expectation pays off in 2 or 3 years and it helps sell tickets right away. Better teams generally dont bring kids up until they are 22-23 or even a bit older and then they put them in limited roles to grow and that likely wont change. But with the cap I suspect we will see younger and younger kids making rosters far quicker on teams that are capped out. BQ2....Bogosian will surely get a larger role in Atlanta but it is hard to tell until you see how they have matured as to the 2nd or 3rd year pro guys. I suspect the guys who come in and make an instant impact will be the guys who played overseas and come in a bit older (like Leino in Detroit who will surely end up as a top 9 forward who could get significant time on their 2nd line).

Tavares, Hedman, Duchene I'd say Hedman I'm afraid it might be the Hurricanes, Philippe Paradis was an outside pick, and there were a lot of guys I would have put ahead of him. But maybe Jim Rutherford has had a stroke of genius and gotten us a guy that will prove valuable. I would be willing to play them in the exhibition games and then the beginning of the season. If we had an injury down the stretch I would call one up and give them a chance. I would say Brandon Sutter. He hasn't broken out in Carolina yet, but with a family like he has you've got to think that he's going to bust out in a big way. He played a little last year, but I think he'll have a bigger role this year.

I will have to disagree with most on the first question. I think Taveras is as good as it gets. His team will lack him the points he is able to get, however, the kid is the real deal. Most effective career? Taveras by a long shot, but Hedman will prove unbelievable value. New scouting staff? Before the draft, I had the assumption it would've been Toronto, but they surprised me and did very well. I'm going to say Carolina has been slouchy lately. BQ 1 - Depends on how hyped up the player is. If you have the attendance of Islander fans to the local bars and the draft for the Taveras pick, you most certainly play him. BQ 2 - EXCELLENT QUESTION my fellow Red Wings fan. The one that REALLY sticks out for me is Erik Johnson. His injury last year really hurt the media attention around him. I mean, this kid is amazing. Ugly as sin, but amazing. Barry 'Mullet man' Melrose talked about him for years, and couldn't stop talking about how he's going to change the future for the Blues. Alex Pietrangelo is another fantastic pick. Finally, I will end with the 'givens' with both Filatov of Columbus and Helm from Detroit. God, I cannot wait for this upcoming year.

John Tavares, Victor Hedman, Matt Duchene & Brayden Schenn. 1. The most effective will be, in my opinion, Tavares. 2. Most effective career will also be, in my opinion, Tavares. I honestly think he has a lot of potential! but I could be wrong. 3. Minnesota. Giving up 12th pick to the Islanders was not a good move! BQ; I think when you honestly feel that, that players is ready for the NHL and perform at that level then you should play him. Even if he's 18 or 19. BQ2: Jordan Eberle.

I'm thinking it's going to be Duchene. Unlike Bob, I think Duchene IS as good as advertised... That doesn't mean I may be wrong, though. Again, Duchene. I think he's a great skater with soft hands, and that Colorado is a perfect fit for him. I can see him staying in Denver through all of his career. Either the Islanders or the Penguins. I just don't think John Tavares has it in him to really bring the Islanders up from the slump they've been in. As for Pittsburgh, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I have no clue why management went with Simon Despres. Landon Ferraro would have been awesome, but now he's property of Detroit... Enjoy his talent, NIPS! BQ: It depends on the kid. Heck, if you ask me, some of them shouldn't be in the NHL until they're at least 23! If the guy's good (and I mean GOOD) at a young age, give him a shot at the NHL when he's 18. But if you think he still has some major flaws in his game, let him work them out and introduce him to the NHL when he gets older. BQ2: I'm sorry, I honestly have no clue... I can hardly remember any of them...

Most effective: Hedman career: Hedman. I've seen him play live, and he's amazing. He skates a very well, and his positioning is awesome. bq: I am 17, and i'd say, the sooner, the better. it's no need, to play a guy in a league, where he is better then the rest of them. Like crosby, or tares, in their last season they made more then 130 points in the junior leauge. They should've played in the NHL a year before. at least in my opinion. bq2: I'm sorry, but i think you made a mistake in this question. Bogosian already started the season with the thrashers and played until november, when he broke his leg. he played 47 games, with an average of 20 minutes/game. He was one of the best players in his team. To get back to your question i think Jacob Josefsson will be the breakout.
