How is the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain picked?

Why is corey pavin the captain of the ryder cup team?

  • hes not even in the top eight himself, and he is hardly considered to be elite, so what qualifies him to be captain or how was he even selected?

  • Answer:

The captain of the team is based on past accomplishments, not how the person is currently playing. The captain is a veteran professional who is about the age of 50, who has won major titles, or has multiple wins, in his career and who himself has played on past Ryder Cup Teams. Pavin has done all of these things. The selection is made by board members of the PGA.

Maybe you should re-examine your question and rationale by researching when the last time a Top-10 player was EVER picked as "captain" of the Ryder Cup team.

Captains haven't played in the Ryder Cup in years. The PGA of America is responsible for picking the captain (it's their event- it is NOT the domain of the PGA Tour) with the understanding that team selection, pairings, and being on-course for his team are the main components. Their policy for the last 20 years has been one of giving a captain one kick at the can (1989 Floyd, 1991 Stockton, 1993 Watson, 1995 L Watkins, Kite 1997, Crenshaw 1999, C Strange 2002, Sutton 2004, Lehman 2006, Azinger 2008, Pavin 2010- all one-time deals). This runs opposite to how the President's Cup is handled, with Jack Nicklaus having been picked on several occasions. Europe has retained some of their successful captains but not all.
