How can I improve my concentration?

  • I just played 18-holes and I noticed that I couldn't concentrate as well on the back 9 as I did the front 9. What I noticed the most was that I didn't keep my eye on the ball as much as I normally do. Granted, life's been busy, I'm tired and in need of a vacation so that's most of the cause of the problem and that can easily be fixed, but can anybody recommend any golf-related (or not) concentration exercises?

  • Answer:

Get into a routine, especially a preshot routine. Its what gets you into a "nothinking" zone. I was talking with a guy I play with on Sundays and at another course, he saw a kid, who was 14 or so, wasn't great, but not bad, shoot a 76 (he is a 4 handicap). He learned that the kid had a mental disease (not autism, but something like it). Basically the kid was good cause he couldn't really use his brain. Amen Bobby Jones... its not really an exercises but concentrate on the present not what happened on the last hole or your last shot or how sore you are from walking and last but not least forget what your heard on tv about your wrist hinge or lag just remember the basics like your stance and the perfect flying shot you see on tv that you want to hit

Try not to think about bad shots you had on the front or back. Also, always picture a good shot instead of where not to hit it. If you're in need of a vacation, try taking a break from golf for a couple of days and then play. Hope it helps.

No excuses regarding concentration. If one shoots 100 and takes 15 seconds per stroke he has to concentrate 25 minutes of the round on shot making. The balance of the time is walking, siting direction of putts, reading greens, estimating yardages, picking the club for the upcoming shot , avoiding hazards and harassing your opponents. So 25 minutes spread over 4 hours is a very short time. The average golfer should be able to concentrate very well for 15 seconds, don't you think?
